New Research Center Named for High-Impact Learning Pioneer
Emporia State University recently named its new Aquatic Research and Outreach Center for Dr. Carl W. Prophet who first experienced Emporia State’s high-impact learning practices more than 60 years ago as a student in biological sciences.
Debate Opens Season with Success
The Emporia State University Debate team kicked off its season on Sept. 16 at the University of Missouri – Kansas City, where students from 26 schools across 13 different states converged for three days of intense competition. All of the debates were about the pros and cons of the United States establishing a national health insurance policy.
Podrebarac Family Named ESU Hornet Heritage Family
The Podrebarac family has had deep ties to Emporia State University ever since 1974. Over the past 43 years and counting, several generations of Podrebarac family members have become Hornet alumni from the two most recent Emporia State eras — Emporia Kansas State College and Emporia State University. Their deep connection to the university has led to the family being recognized as the 2017 Hornet Heritage Family Award recipient.
ESU Earns National Accolades
Emporia State University is the only public university in Kansas to have earned national recognition as a College of Distinction, an honor for universities demonstrating innovative application of high-impact education. In addition, in the Best Colleges 2018 guidebook by U.S. News and World Report, ESU is ranked No. 2 in lowest student debt of all Midwest regional universities.
ESU Announces Hornet Nation Rising Initiative
To maintain the momentum of the most successful fundraising campaign in the history of Emporia State University, a focused fundraising initiative has been announced, Hornet Nation Rising. Efforts from previous fundraising efforts resulted in the renovation of several learning spaces on campus to include the latest technology and new collaboration spaces for our students, as well as improvements to some athletic facilities improvements.
Student debt at Emporia State continues to fall, earning national recognition
Emporia State is earning notice for its students’ lower-than-average debt load upon graduation. In rankings announced this week by U.S. News and World Report, ESU was the No. 1 university in Kansas for least student debt load and No. 2 for regional Midwest universities.

Emporia State University Theatre presents “Family Furniture”
ESU’s Theatre Department is set to present its first production of the year, “Family Furniture.” The play’s author A.R. Gurney — who passed away in June of this year — is an audience favorite, and ESU Theatre has produced several of his works including “The Dining Room,” “Love Letters” and “Sylvia.”
