BEREAVEMENT LEAVE

Effective: August 15, 2024

Purpose: To detail the accrual and use of bereavement leave for employees.

Scope: This policy applies to all employees campus wide.

Responsible Office: Human Resources

Policy Statement: Employees may be granted bereavement leave with pay upon the death of a close relative. Bereavement leave cannot exceed six (6) consecutive working days. The employee's relationship to the deceased and the necessary travel time will be among the factors considered. A bereavement leave request form should be submitted to the employee’s supervisor.

Bereavement leave for others may be granted, taking into account the relationship to the deceased, as approved by the administrator in charge of Human Resources. When an employee requests bereavement leave for a person other than a close relative and the request is denied, the employee may be granted vacation leave. If the employee has no vacation leave, they may be granted leave without pay.

Definitions: All words and phrases shall be interpreted utilizing their plain meanings unless otherwise defined in another University or Board of Regents policy or by statute or regulation.

Close Relative - includes spouse, children, parents, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, and uncles including (half, step, in-law, or foster).

Procedures: All procedures linked and related to the policies above shall have the full force and effect of policy if said procedures have first been properly approved by the University’s administrator in charge of Human Resources Procedures.
