UNDERGRADUATE ACADEMIC LOAD

Effective: August 15, 2024

Purpose: To support student academic success and to provide consistent and quality delivery of academic programs and services.

Scope: This policy applies to all University undergraduate students campus wide.

Responsible Office: Academic Affairs; Registrar’s Office

Policy Statement: A normal load for undergraduate students is fifteen (15) to sixteen (16) hours of credit each semester. A load exceeding eighteen (18) hours must be approved by the student's advisor and the head of the academic unit for the student’s major.

The overload for summer varies with the duration of the courses. The normal load allowed without overload permission is one credit hour for each week of attendance (e.g., five (5) credit hours is a normal load if the course, or courses, is over a five (5) week period).

Definitions: All words and phrases shall be interpreted utilizing their plain meanings unless otherwise defined in another University or Board of Regents policy or by statute or regulation.

Procedures: All procedures linked and related to the policies above shall have the full force and effect of policy if said procedures have first been properly approved by the University’s administrator in charge of Academic Affairs.
