TEXTBOOK AND COURSE MATERIAL SELECTION

Effective: August 15, 2024

Purpose: To identify who is responsible for determining what textbook and course materials will be utilized and where they can be obtained.

Scope: This policy applies to the University campus wide.

Responsible Office: Academic Affairs

Policy Statement: Textbook and course material selection and preparation is the prerogative of the individual faculty member, who is the instructor of record for a course, acting in accordance with the selection procedures established by the academic unit’s selection procedures. Materials (including, but not limited to, content, syllabi, assessments, and exams) created by one instructor may only be used by another with the creator’s consent. Appropriate documentation of consent shall be determined and maintained by the academic unit of the instructor of record.

The Bookstore in the Memorial Student Union has procedures for ordering textbooks and other materials. Textbooks may also be ordered through other bookstores including those online, but any such orders must comply with any applicable contract between the University and a textbook provider.

Solicited and Unsolicited Textbooks and Materials

The State of Kansas has determined that all books/educational materials provided at no cost to any faculty or staff member are state property and cannot be sold by the individual.

Definitions: All words and phrases shall be interpreted utilizing their plain meanings unless otherwise defined in another University or Board of Regents policy or by statute or regulation.

Procedures: All procedures linked and related to the policies above shall have the full force and effect of policy if said procedures have first been properly approved by the University’s administrator in charge of Academic Affairs.
