RESIDENT ACADEMIC CREDIT

Effective: August 15, 2024

Purpose: To establish guidelines for earning resident credit for off-campus study at the University.

Scope: This policy applies to all University students campus wide.

Responsible Office: Academic Affairs

Policy Statement: All course work taken through the University, regardless of the delivery method, is Resident Credit.

Under specific circumstances, Resident Credit can be obtained for off-campus study. Credit earned through another university as part of an exchange program or an University-approved study abroad program is considered Resident Credit within the scope of this policy. The credit value for each course is detailed in the class schedule. Distance education courses conducted off-campus may be eligible for Resident Credit if the following criteria are met:

  • The course must receive advance approval as an off-campus offering for Resident Credit by the relevant academic unit supervising administrator, college/school dean, and, if applicable, the Dean of the Graduate School for courses with graduate credit. Approval is granted on the condition that the proposed off-campus course is equivalent to its on-campus counterpart.
  • The course must be overseen by a University faculty member (or graduate faculty for graduate credit courses) who actively participates in teaching the class and evaluates student performance. Off-campus individuals who meet the necessary qualifications may be appointed as part-time faculty members through standard procedures.

Definitions: All words and phrases shall be interpreted utilizing their plain meanings unless otherwise defined in another University or Board of Regents policy or by statute or regulation.

Procedures: All procedures linked and related to the policies above shall have the full force and effect of policy if said procedures have first been properly approved by the University’s administrator in charge of Academic Affairs.
