4.57 ENGLISH PROFICIENCY TESTING AND PLACEMENT IN INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM

Effective: August 15, 2024

Purpose: The University has established certain standards with regard to English proficiency which non-native speakers of English must meet. The University offers an Intensive English Program designed to meet the specific needs of international students in preparing them for academic study.

Scope: This policy applies to all international students whose native language is not English.

Responsible Office: Academic Affairs

Policy Statement: Upon admission, international students who have not provided results from an approved English proficiency test or have scores below the admission requirements are required to undergo a diagnostic English proficiency test upon arrival at the University.

This test occurs before each semester commences. Results from this test determine the student's placement in either intensive English courses or regular academic classes. Students who demonstrate deficiencies in any skill area must enroll in the Intensive English Program (IEP).

The English proficiency of graduate students seeking admission to the University is confirmed by verifying the applicant's native language as English or English proficiency testing.

Definitions: All words and phrases shall be interpreted utilizing their plain meanings unless otherwise defined in another University or Board of Regents policy or by statute or regulation.

Procedures: All procedures linked and related to the policies above shall have the full force and effect of policy if said procedures have first been properly approved by the University’s administrator in charge of Academic Affairs.
