4.56 DEVELOPMENTAL COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Effective: August 15, 2024
Purpose: This policy was developed to support student academic success and to provide consistent, quality delivery of academic programs and services.
Scope: This policy applies to University students whose skills in the area of reading, writing, or mathematics need to be improved in order for them to be academically successful.
Responsible Office: Academic Affairs
Policy Statement: A student identified as requiring developmental coursework should enroll in the necessary course(s) during their initial semester and continue enrollment each subsequent semester until the requirements are satisfactorily fulfilled.
Students needing developmental coursework are not permitted to enroll in a more advanced course within the same discipline until the developmental course is successfully completed.
Advising responsibilities for students with developmental course requirements should be retained by the Student Advising Center until the completion of the developmental course requirements.
Definitions: All words and phrases shall be interpreted utilizing their plain meanings unless otherwise defined in another University or Board of Regents policy or by statute or regulation.
Developmental Coursework - educational instruction aimed at addressing foundational skills or knowledge gaps in students. These courses are designed to provide students with the fundamental skills necessary for success in college-level courses.
Procedures: All procedures linked and related to the policies above shall have the full force and effect of policy if said procedures have first been properly approved by the University’s administrator in charge of Academic Affairs.
