4.07 ACADEMIC FREEDOM
Effective: August 15, 2024
Purpose: To provide the standards by which academic freedom will be evaluated.
Scope: This policy applies to all University faculty
Responsible Office: Academic Affairs
Policy Statement: Emporia State University believes the policies and guidelines developed by the American Association of University Professors, in its 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Faculty Tenure with 1970 Interpretive Comments, are reasonable and prudent. The University endorses them insofar as they are compatible with the laws of the state of Kansas and the policies of the Kansas Board of Regents in decisions and actions that are pertinent.
Definitions: All words and phrases shall be interpreted utilizing their plain meanings unless otherwise defined in another University or Board of Regents policy or by statute or regulation.
Procedures: All procedures linked and related to the policies above shall have the full force and effect of policy if said procedures have first been properly approved by the University’s administrator in charge of Academic Affairs.
