4.78 ACADEMIC APPEALS
Effective: August 15, 2024
Purpose: To outline the requirements and criteria for appeals of decisions affecting a student’s academic record.
Scope: This policy applies to the University campus wide
Responsible Office: Academic Affairs
Policy Statement: If a student is dissatisfied with a decision that impacts the student’s academic record (such as a grade assignment, or a degree candidacy denial) and if satisfactory negotiations with the decision-making entity (such as an instructor or a committee) are not satisfactory, the student will have access to an academic appeal and should follow the academic appeals procedures. The appropriate procedure can be obtained from each academic unit or the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs.
An academic appeal must be initiated within one (1) semester after the semester in which the issue occurs. The purpose of this policy and its related procedures is to ensure that due process is observed.
As it is used herein, the term “class days” is defined to include all days that classes are conducted, excluding weekends, legal holidays, vacation periods, the period of final examinations, intersessions, and for the purposes of this document summer school.
It is not intended that an appeal shall fail or succeed upon a technicality. Therefore, application of any part of this policy or its related procedures shall be equitable and reasonable.
If the faculty or student feels that the appeals process was conducted inappropriately, then the faculty or student has the right to seek a remedy through applicable grievance procedures, if any.
All deliberations during the academic appeals process shall be confidential.
Definitions: All words and phrases shall be interpreted utilizing their plain meanings unless otherwise defined in another University or Board of Regents policy or by statute or regulation.
Procedures: All procedures linked and related to the policies above shall have the full force and effect of policy if said procedures have first been properly approved by the University’s administrator in charge of Academic Affairs.
