Phase I Application Procedure

Step by step application instructions

Following these steps will speed up the application process:

  1. Application deadlines are November 15 for a Spring Phase I and April 15 for a Fall Phase I. Apply early to ensure you get the section you need or want (when two sections are available).
  2. Download an unofficial transcript from Hornet 365.
  3. Complete the application form, including obtaining your content area program coordinator’s signature at ams.emporia.edu. Enter your Emporia State username and password. Click "login". Contact ESU's Help Desk with any questions at 620-341-5555 (Toll-free: 1-877-341-5555).
    - 3a. Follow these instructions to complete the secondary education Phase I application.
  4. Contact your professional advisor to set up a Phase I application appointment.

Phase I Registration

  1. Students who meet admissions criteria will be enrolled in the three Phase I courses (nine credit hours total) by their professional advisor. Secondary Phase I courses include the following: PY 344, Educational Psychology; ED 333, Principles of Secondary Education; and ED 334, Classroom Management.
  2. Students who have not met all requirements and/or who have not successfully appealed Phase

Other Information

  1. The Orientation to Secondary Phase I meeting is held the day before classes begin each semester. This orientation is held in Visser Hall 126. All students entering Phase I are required to attend.
  2. To be eligible for Phase I, all requirements must be completed, documented, and submitted to the Director of Secondary Education before the Orientation to Phase I meeting. Completing the application provides a record of these requirements to the Director.
  3. Candidates who will not meet certain requirements before the Orientation meeting must complete an appeal to be considered for admission to Phase I. Not all requirements are appealable. Appeals are due to the Director of Secondary Education, Dr. Cecil R. Short, one week before the Orientation meeting. Late appeals will not be considered.
