BSE Elementary Education (Special Education) Unified Option
You may add the elementary/special education unified option to any elementary education route as a concentration if you are interested in teaching in a special education setting. You will gain experience:
- Developing and implementing Individual Educational Programs (IEPs)
- Planning instruction considering individual learner characteristics
- Collaborating with professionals and families to meet the needs of all students
The elementary education unified option leads to licensure in Elementary Education Unified (K-6).

- Are you interested in teaching in a special education setting?
Elementary/special education unified may be a good fit for you, if you are interested in teaching in a special education setting. With the elementary education unified option, you are prepared to teach in both general education and special education classrooms.
- How is the elementary education unified route different from a traditional elementary education program?
Students who select the elementary/special education option take many of the same courses that other elementary education majors take; however, they also take specialized courses preparing them to work with diverse learners who qualify for special education services.
- Can the elementary education unified route be taken entirely online?
Yes, students may take any course for the elementary education unified option online.
- What experiences will I get in the general education classroom and special education classroom?
Throughout your program of study, you will have experiences working in both settings. During your student teaching semester, you can expect to spend 8 weeks of student teaching in a general education classroom and 8 weeks of student teaching in a special education classroom.
