2019-2020 King Recognition Award
The Dr. John E. King Professor Recognition recognizes the faculty member receiving the second highest ranking as part of the review process for the Endowed Professorship Award.
For the 2019-20 academic year, Dr. Melissa Reed was the recipient of the award.
Melissa Reed received her PhD in Curriculum and Teaching with a Literacy Education emphasis from the University of Kansas. She joined the Elementary Education, Early Childhood and Special Education faculty in 2005 after having spent a number of years teaching at the elementary and middle school levels.
Reed has played a key role in the development of the college’s new Masters in Elementary Education, which is designed for career changers who have a desire to teach. She has many publications and presentations to her name, many of which include collaboration with students. She has served as a mentor on countless action research and collaborative mentoring projects, which have significantly impacted student learning and built strong community partnerships.
Through her leadership, the Paraguay Partnership has continued to grow. Not only has she visited Paraguay, but she also ensured that Paraguay visitors to Emporia have an amazing, unforgettable experience. Reed is the recipient of a number of awards, including the Ervay Family Award for Applied Scholarship.
