Endowed Professorship

A charitable gift made by Arthur C. Piculell, Jr. established and endowed professorship in the name of Dr. John E. King in 2019. The professorship’s purpose is to supplement the salary of a distinguished professor within The Teachers College at Emporia State University.

Dr. John E. King became the 11th president of the Kansas State Teachers College, now Emporia State University, in 1953. Following the example of Dr. John E. King, the Dr. John E. King Endowed Professor will embody the following characteristics: progressive, innovative, visionary, impactful and relationship building. This award is in honor and recognition of the impact that educational leaders like Dr. John E. King have on the lives of students. It is projected (but not mandatory) that this will be an annual award.

Once awarded, the recipient will receive a one-time salary supplement of $10,000, and thereafter maintain the title of Dr. John E. King Endowed Professor.

The candidate receiving the second highest ranking will receive the Dr. John E. King Professor Recognition Award and may receive a one-time cash stipend of $2,500.

QUALIFICATIONS

• The candidate awarded as the Dr. John E. King Endowed Professor must be an active full or associate tenured professor.
  
• The candidate awarded must have completed a minimum of five years on the tenure track in The Teachers College at Emporia State University.
  
• Once awarded, the recipient cannot be nominated again.
  
• The candidate can either be nominated by a colleague or self.
  
• The Dr. John E. King Endowed Professor will deliver The Teachers College Lecture during the year of the endowed professorship.

The deadline for nominations has been changed to April 24.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The application will consist of the following:

• One of the following two options, either a narrative (five-page maximum) OR a video (three-minute maximum) highlighting how the candidate is distinguished as an educational leader and has an impact on the lives of students.
  
• Current curriculum vitae.
  
• Recommendations from students. Up to four recommendation forms (available on the website) from previous and current Emporia State University students, not to exceed two pages for each form.
  
• Recommendations from peers. Up to three letters of recommendation, not to exceed two pages for each letter. At least one letter needs to be from current Emporia State University faculty.
  
• Application portfolios must be submitted to ttcdean@emporia.edu.
  
• Selection will be made by a university selection committee comprised of three active Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professors who are not part of The Teachers College. The selection committee will be chosen by the dean of The Teachers College with input from the Academic Leadership Council.
