The Inspired by Math program is funded by Dolciani Mathematics Enrichment Grant (provided by the Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation via the Mathematical Association of America), ESU High Impact Learning Grant, Emporia Middle School and Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation.
Inspired By Math is a math enrichment, STEM outreach program for 6th-8th grade students in the Emporia area. The program consists of two components for students to participate in during the year.
A four-day summer camp is held on the ESU campus during the summer where students will learn about Geometry, Number Sense, Probability and Statistics, and Logic and Reasoning. They will also tour the ESU campus, learn how to crack codes using cryptography, and be engaged in other hands-on activities. The summer camp allows students to see what the weekly after-school program will look like.
During the school year, students can choose to participate in the once-a-week, after-school program. For one hour before or after school, students will learn about geometry by building dome structures and or play casino games to teach probability. Guest speakers present various math topics for the students several times a year, and students attend a field trip at the end of the school year.
Questions about the camp should be directed to Holly Hollenbeck at hhollenb@emporia.edu
