Workshop on Coaching Education Offered

Helping make a difference in lives and optimizing performance. How do you handle this at any level of coaching?

Emporia State will host two speakers in a workshop for coaches, athletic directors, recreation directors, and administrators this spring for a one-day coaching education experience addressing this goal.

The eighth annual More than the X’s and O’s workshop will be held Tuesday, April 4 in Visser Hall, Rm 330.

“A coach has a tremendous influence in developing athletes and the opportunity to work with athletes and make a positive difference is priceless,” said Mark Stanbrough, Director of Emporia State’s Coaching Education program. “Good coaches continue to seek knowledge and realize the importance of more than the X’s and O’s by systematically developing the physical, mental and character skills of the student-athletes they work with.”

Dr. Ian Connole and Dr. Timothy Baghurst will be speaking at the workshop.

Connole is passionate about coaching the mental game. As the Kansas State Athletics Sports Psychologist he provides comprehensive mental training services for all student-athletes, coaches, and teams. He is also a member of Vision Pursue™, a consulting company dedicated to improving mindsets and performance through technology based training. Connole was recently featured as a TEDx speaker sharing lessons for Fueling Human Excellence.

Dr. Timothy Baghurst is an associate professor of physical education at Oklahoma State University and the director of its coaching education program. He completed his undergraduate degree in Sports Science from the University of Chichester, England and his masters in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Bangor University, Wales. He obtained a doctorate in Kinesiology at the University of Arkansas while he also served as a nutritional counselor for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Dr. Baghurst played competitive racquetball for several years and now assists the International Racquetball Federation. He has researched and published numerous works in physical education, coaching, and sport psychology.
