Preparing for Repatriation
Dr. Brice Obermeyer, associate professor in Sociology, Anthropology and Crime and Delinquency Studies, visited the American Museum of Natural History, Division of Anthropology, in New York. With Larry Brooks and Homer Scott, Brice represented the Delaware Tribe of Oklahomaas one of three delegations that came to view Delaware ethnographic items, tour the Eastern Woodlands Hall and plan for upcoming repatriations under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. Brice serves as the director of the Delaware Tribe’s Historic Preservation Office, located in Emporia.
Exercise Is Medicine
Thanks to efforts by faculty, staff and students in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, Emporia State is now an Exercise Is Medicine On Campusregistered school by the American College of Sports Medicine, one of only three universities in Kansas with the designation. We are celebrating October as Exercise Is Medicine On Campus Month with events to promote wellness through physical activities.

Congratulations to ESU graduate Diana Acevedo (M.S. Biology, 2012; Thesis advisor: Dr. Marsh Sundberg) on her recognition as a Rising Trendsetter in Science at the 2018 STEMMY Awards Gala Luncheon held September 27 in Kansas City, Missouri. Diana is currently a second-year student pursuing a Ph.D. in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UMKC School of Medicine. BizHornet alumni and friends enjoyed our Game Day Experienceon October 6. The alumni toured Cremer Hall, visited the new BizHornet Center and enjoyed some virtual reality demonstrations in Richel Lab. They enjoyed a tailgate lunch and later watched ESU beat Fort Hays!
Gary Sherrer, Kansas’ 45th lieutenant governor, began Executive in Residenceon October 7 in Cremer Hall. He will participate in many events throughout the next three weeks. Follow our social media for an up-to-date schedule.
Congratulations to Stephanie Whitacre (BSB Accounting 2006; MBA 2008) who was named a director at BKD CPAs & Advisors in Kansas City. BKD is a national CPA and advisory firm with 38 offices in 17 states.
Library & Information Management
The School of Library and Information Management had a special tree-planting ceremonyOctober 1 to honor Dr. Zubaidah Isa, one of three Emporia State University professors killed in the Whippoorwill boating disaster in 1978.
SLIM faculty and staff honored Candace Kitselman, SLIM business manager, for her years of service. Candace retiredat the end of September 2018.
Congratulations to alumnus Eric Swenson, who was profiled in an article in the Salina Journal. Eric works as a network administratorat the Salina Public Library.
The Teachers College
Congratulations to Kate Thornton who was named Kansas Association of Secondary School Principals Area III Assistant Principal of the Year. The Chapman native is assistant principal at Chapman High School. She will receive her award on November 7 during the Kansas Principals Conference.
Athletics
Emporia State’s Braxton Marstall and Jace McDown earned MIAA Football Player of the Weekhonors following the Hornets 28-24 win over then No. 18 Fort Hays State.
Emporia State running back Landon Nault has been recognized as a part of one of the most impressive groups of scholar-athletes in the history of college football. The senior from Kingfisher, Okla. was announced as one of 179 semifinalists for the 2018 William V. Campbell Trophy® by The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
TRIO
In their first year as ESU McNair Scholars, 17 students attended the 22nd Annual Heartland McNair Research Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, last month. Of those, five presented their research as posters and four as oral presentations. See the full list in Presentations, below.
Publications
Dr. Antonina Bauman, together with her colleague from the Pacific National University (Khabarovsk, Russia) Dr. Nina Shcherbina, published a paper titled “Millennials, Technology, and Cross-Cultural Communication” in the Journal of Higher Education Theory and Practice(vol. 18, issue 3).
Dr. Zeni Colorado-Resa co-wrote “Undisclosed stories of instructional design female scholars in academia” in the November-December 2018 Women’s Studies International Forum.
Presentations
Dr. Derek Yonai presented “Educating the Morality of Free Enterprise” to the Bastiat Society of Wichitaon September 27. Yonai discussed how business education is broken, the need to refocus it on human flourishing and well-being and what the attendees can do to make the world a better place.
South Dakota Library Association conference:
- Lisa Martin, a SLIM student, held a session called “Creating Smart Spaces in Small Libraries” with her colleague, Melanie Argo;

Dr. Nancy Albrecht, Professor in School Leadership, and Melissa Brunner (MS - Educational Administration, 18) presented “The Impact of Positive Behavioral Supports and Social-emotional Learning Curriculum upon Teaching and Learning” at the Ninth International Conference on Education and Educational Psychologyheld in Athens, Greece in early October.
Dr. Mark Stanbrough presented “Bring It On: Exciting Activities for Teaching Sport Psychology Face-to-Face and Online” and “Coaching Above the Physical-Developing the Holistic Athlete by Intentionally Coaching Mental Skills and Character” at the Association for Applied Sport Psychology’s Annual Conferenceheld Oct. 3-6, 2018 in Toronto, Canada.
Katie McGlinn (MS - Educational Administration, 18) presented her spring practicum project to a group of educators at the Safe and Supportive Schools Conferencein Wichita on September 24. The project was under the supervision of her practicum professor, Dr. Tim Marshall. McGlinn and Marshall will present in Wichita on October 15 at the Kansas State Department of Education’s Annual Conference.
Dr. Annie Opat, director and trainer of Reading Recovery, presented two Reading Recovery sessions at the Sixth Annual Jacobson Center and Reading Recovery Literacy Academy
on this week: “Providing a Clear Focus: Learning to Look at Print Effectively” and “Shaping Our Language to Facilitate Independent Learning.”
Dr. Brendan Fay presented the paper “Wagner under Weimar: Reassessing Wagner Reception between Weimar and the Third Reich” at the German Studies Association conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on September 28.
Director of Composition Dr. Kat O’Meara (EMLJ) presented at the MidAmerica Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages Conferencein Kansas City, Missouri, on September 28. Her presentation, “Implementing Multilingual Sections of First-Year Composition: Stakeholders, Processes, Lessons Learned,” detailed the approaches to and the research study associated with piloting sections of Composition I specifically designed for Emporia’s growing multilingual undergraduate population.
