The National Teachers Hall of Fame is rolling out the red carpet this week to honor its 27th induction class.
The NTHF was established at Emporia State University in 1989. Beginning in 1992, five teachers have been selected each year for induction into the hall. The 27th class of teachers, who have a combined 169 years of classroom experience, are:
- Connie Bagley, dyslexia reading specialist K-5, Crockett Elementary School, San Marcos, Texas;
- Jeff Baxter, English language arts 9-12, Blue Valley West High School, Overland Park, Kansas;
- Peggy Jackson, AP Government and U.S. History 11-12, Moriarty High School, Moriarty, New Mexico;
- Maureen Murphy-Foelkl, K-5 environmental science, Straub Environmental Center, Salem, Oregon; and
- Bradley Upshaw, second and third grade, Vanalden Avenue Elementary School, Tarzana, California.
The inductees began their time in Emporia today with visits to the NTHF Museum, One Room School and Memorial to Fallen Educators on the ESU campus. Other induction events free and open to the public include:
- Roundtable webinar, 1:30-3 p.m. Wednesday, Visser Hall 114;
- Rededication ceremonies at the Memorial to Fallen Educators, 2 p.m. Thursday, 18th Avenue and Merchant Street;
- Emporia Municipal Band concert, 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Fremont Park; the NTHF will serve root beer floats to the first 200 people;
- Documentary film “Most Likely to Succeed” followed by discussion and comments from inductees, 9 a.m. Friday, Visser Hall 118;
- Induction ceremony, 7:15-9 p.m. Friday, Webb Hall in ESU Memorial Union
