Over the weekend, many of you may have wondered about the impact on Emporia State University of President Trump’s executive order suspending immigration from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. Some of you may be concerned about its impact on you personally, on family members or friends, or on your ability to conduct research in these countries.
We know that many have concerns about our national security. We are hopeful that a balance can be found between these concerns and the ability of scholars around the world to work together for the betterment of all.
Like most universities, ESU is a community of individuals from around the world studying and researching together. We are exploring how the university can support members of Hornet Nation who are from these countries. They are worried about their friends and family members, the impact on their ability to travel and the uncertainty of their futures.
Already, International Education staff have connected with each student impacted, offering support and helping answer questions. If you have questions, please contact International Education in Room 103 of the Memorial Union or by phone at 620-341-5374. Support also is available at the Student Counseling Center located in Morse Hall Southeast 250, 620-341-5222.
The executive order, which is effective for 90 days, has created uncertainty and confusion. Over the next three months we will continue to monitor the situation, support members of our community and provide information as it becomes available. Our campus and all of Hornet Nation are made richer by the contributions of each and every student, faculty member and staff member. We value the rich diversity of our campus.
Sincerely,
Allison D. Garrett
President
