Speakers bring real world experience to campus

Students will have the opportunity to attend lectures on Oct. 8 by Walmart U.S.’s executive vice president of people, Kristin Oliver, and esteemed business author Bo Burlingham.

Kristin Oliver will speak at 1 p.m. in Webb Hall of Emporia State’s Memorial Union and will address issues surrounding human resource management, corporate practices and leadership. The School of Business will host Oliver’s visit, which also includes presenting to students in a supervisory management class.

“The School of Business has a specific interest in bringing industry experts to Emporia State to speak to our students,” said Dr. Nathan Woolard, assistant professor, who will record an interview with Oliver as part of his Business Dynamics and Professionalism class.

Burlingham, editor-at-large for INC. and business author, will hold a discussion at 6 p.m. in the William Allen White Library commons surrounding topics from his recent publication “Small Giants.” The book focuses on characteristics of certain companies that make them unique and inspiring.

Burlingham is hosted by the Koch Center for Leadership and Ethics as part of its yearly speaker series.

“We are excited to have Mr. Burlingham as our second speaker in a three-part speaker series this fall,” said Dr. Steven Lovett, assistant professor and Koch Center co-director. “His career-long insight into how certain companies focus on value over profit is a critical part of the Koch Center’s exploration of the impact of principled entrepreneurship on a free society.”

There is no charge for either lecture and both are open to the public.
