Research & Creativity Celebrated on Wednesday

Approximately 250 students and faculty from ESU will participate in Research and Creativity Day on Wednesday, April 25. All events take place in the Memorial Union.

Events will begin in the morning with oral presentations by undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate students will participate in the “Three Minute Thesis” event in the morning, the fourth year for this contest.

The award and recognition luncheon will take place in the Colonial Ballroom and will include the Phi Kappa Phi Awards for best abstracts, announcement of graduate student scholarships and awards, the ESU Summer Undergraduate Research Program Awards, recognition of faculty who received Faculty Research & Creativity awards, and will conclude with the presentation of the 2018 President’s Award for Research and Creativity.

Dr. Gary Ziek, professor in the Department of Music, will receive the President's Award for Research and Creativity.

This award was established in 1996 to honor an ESU individual who has been active in research, scholarly activity, or creative endeavors. The individual receiving this award must be peer-nominated and is selected by a subcommittee of the ESU Faculty Research and Creativity Committee.

Dr. Ziek received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from Michigan State University in 1994 and came to ESU in 1995.  Dr. Ziek is an accomplished composer, with six new works published recently and an additional five works published just in 2017. As stated by a colleague, “each one of these publications takes an incredibly extensive amount of time to complete.  To have 11 works published in just two years is a gigantic accomplishment.”  His compositions are nationally and internationally recognized and are regularly performed around the world.  In addition to his compositions, Dr. Ziek is a dedicated performer and instructor and works diligently to contribute to his field of study and performance.

Dr. Ziek will receive $2,500.

Student and faculty will participate in the poster session in the afternoon from 1 to 3 in Webb Hall. There are 148 poster exhibits this year, offering a wide variety of disciplines and topics. Attendees may vote for their favorite oral and poster presentation, and there will be cash prizes for the top People’s Choice awards. There will also be a drawing for door prizes donated by Emporia merchants at 3:00. A complete list of presentations is available at www.emporia.edu/research.

The event is sponsored by the Research and Grants Center, Honors College, and the Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Committee.
