Educators are being offered opportunities to increase their skill and knowledge through workshops and conferences provided this spring through The Teachers College at Emporia State University. Some events offered have graduate credit available.
February 1 – "Active Learning through Makerspaces," is a one-day workshop with graduate credit available. This is an all day workshop focusing on why students have an increased level of motivation, success and assessment when content is presented through active learning theories. February 13 – “Conversations about Teaching,” will feature two of the 2016 Kansas Master Teachers. Nikki Chamberlain, a high school chemistry teacher in Salina USD 305, and Adriane Falco, an elementary music educator in Blue Valley USD 229, will speak at the event. It will be held at 7 p.m. in Visser Hall, Room 330 and all students and the public are welcome to attend.
February 15 – “Read, Write, & Think Like a Scientist” is a one-day workshop with graduate credit available. K-6 teachers will increase their understanding of how to integrate literacy strategies into their science lessons. They will explore strategies for building their students’ critical analysis skills applicable to written text, science labs, media, and more while enhancing their literacy skills. March 8 – “Guiding Readers Through Information Text” is a one-day workshop with graduate credit available. Expert readers not only recognize text features and text structures but also use them to impose meaning. But how do we teach this skill to less-than-expert readers? April 4 – “More than the X’s and O’s,” a one-day workshop with credit available. This eighth annual one-day coaching workshop will feature Dr. Ian Connole, Director of Sport Psychology with the Kansas State University Athletic Department, and Dr. Timothy Baghaurst, Director of Coaching Science at Oklahoma State University.
