An associate director at the Earl S. Richardson Library at Morgan State University will be the next University Libraries and Archives dean at Emporia State University.
Michelle Hammond will begin her new role on Aug. 8, according to Dr. David Cordle, Emporia State provost and vice president for academic affairs.
Hammond has served as associate director for public services for the Earl S. Richardson Library — the main academic information resource on the campus of Morgan State University in Baltimore — since 2010. Before that, she worked in libraries and information services at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and Bowie (Maryland) State University.
“It is an incredibly exciting time at Emporia State University and I am thrilled and honored to have been selected as the new University Libraries and Archives dean,” Hammond said. “I look forward to working with both the library and executive teams to continue building on the great programs that are currently in place.
“The library team will continue to move our great Hornet Nation into the next phase of academic libraries as the digital future continues to emerge, unfold and grow.”
Before entering academia, Hammond spent nearly a decade as national content manager and music librarian for XM Satellite Radio — now Sirius/XM Satellite Radio. During that time, she led a team to create the largest CD library in North America with more than 3 million song titles. She also created a staff training program and XM internship program that continues to exist.
Hammond earned a bachelor’s degree in music management/business from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, a master of music performance (jazz studies) from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and completed doctoral studies in ethnomusicology from at the University of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania).
During her years with Sirius XM, Hammond returned to school, earning a master of science in library science in 2009 from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
“The William Allen White Library is known as a front-line resource for support of learning and research at ESU, and we look to our new library dean to build on this success,” said Provost Cordle. “Michelle Hammond’s experience in academic libraries and in corporate settings prepares her to do just that.
“Michelle is a proven planner, collaborator and developer of people and programs. We look forward to bringing her on board as the newest member of the university’s leadership team.”
