ESU Commencements Have Indoor Alternative

This weekend’s commencement ceremonies at Emporia State University now have indoor alternatives in case of inclement weather.

Dr. David P. Cordle, ESU provost and vice president for academic affairs, announced today that White Auditorium in downtown Emporia will be used if being outdoors in Welch Stadium is not feasible.

“Given the weather forecast, we are pleased and grateful that the City is making William L. White Auditorium available in the event that an indoor venue is needed,” Cordle said.

The dates and times for ceremonies are:

  • Graduate students will receive their degrees at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 14.
  • Undergraduates will be recognized at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 15.

These ceremonies will be in Welch Stadium on the ESU campus. If the venue needs to change, ESU officials will announce that at least three hours before the events are scheduled to begin. Changes will be shared on ESU social media, the website homepage (emporia.edu), local media and direct email to faculty, staff and students.

No matter which venue is used, the following plans for COVID-19 precautions remain in place:

  • Each graduate is allowed two guests inside the venues. Graduates will be given two wristbands when they check in. They are responsible for getting those wristbands to their guests.
  • No audience members will be admitted without wristbands. This includes children.
  • All participants and audience members will wear masks and follow instructions at the venue for seating and distancing.
