Kansas Literacy Week
On Friday, Aug. 18, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback declared the week of Sept. 3 through 9 Kansas Literacy Week as a result of efforts put forth by the Kansas Masonic Literacy Center and Emporia State University. Kansas Literacy Week coincides with Library Card Sign-up Month, National Read a Book Day (Sept. 6), and International Literacy Day (Sept. 8).
Alumni Relations
On Aug. 26, ESU's South Central Alumni Chapter hosted the Don Edwards Golf Classic. In its 20th year, this annual golf scramble tournament has raised over $150,000 to fund scholarships for ESU students who come to Emporia State from the south-central region of Kansas.
Business
Dr. Steve Lovett has been invited to chair the Ethics Committee for Newman Regional Health.
The School of Business hosted its annual ice cream social last Friday. Many students took some time to enjoy some refreshing ice cream.
Tonight the School of Business is host for its fourth annual BizFest. This event is open to all students and features fun games, free food and prizes. Information on the School and our organizations will be available. Follow the event on Twitter at #ESUBizFest.
Library & Information Management
Dennis Christman and Nora Burmeister, Oregon SLIM graduates in 2014, have moved to the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina where Nora is now the online learning librarian at the Central Carolina Community College. Dennis is the new metadata transformational librarian at Duke University.
The Teachers College
Howard West (BS 2005, Business; MS 2007, IDT) received a 2017 Raytheon Global Mentoring Excellence Award for the positive impact he has and on employees’ professional development.
Alum Jesse Griffin of Lee’s Summit West High School was recently named the 2017 National High School Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association.
Students at Emporia State served as interns in a variety of settings this summer:
Michaela Lazzo and Jordan Nooney, graduate art therapy students, served at their Wichita internship site, Creative Bliss, a workshop studio and private practice co-owned by two ESU art therapy alums, Katie (Meredith) Francis and Jessica Muret.
Sydney Inman and Nicole Lamb, graduate art therapy students, interned at the Lawrence Arts Center. The interns help children with special needs to succeed within the regular summer day camp.
Emporia's Plumb Place helps women transition from homelessness and domestic violence. Current ESU art therapy students Sydney Inman and Nicole Lamb worked with interim director Clara Corn and part time art therapist Alee McCoy, both ESU alumni.
Jamie Child and Anna Berthelsen, graduate art therapy interns, coordinated to provide group and individual services at Hetlinger of Emporia. This summer, they engaged clientele to create a triptych mural which will be hung at the agency in the near future.
Art therapy intern Lindsey Riesselman was featured in the summer newsletter of House of Hope in Kansas City, which provides a therapeutic group home for troubled girls with the goal of transitioning back to the family.
Information Technology
IT launched the new version of Hornet TV, our visual communications platform, showcasing the diversity of the system by providing interactive signage maps for move-in day, event coverage of the solar eclipse and a public preview of the new livestream.
Arts & Sciences
Congratulations to Mary Ralston (MSFS 2017) on her new job as a DNA analyst for the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Recent graduate Kathryn Martin (BID 2017) is now public relations coordinator for Emporia Chamber of Commerce.
History graduate student and teacher Dirk Over won a $2,500 grant from Shopko to fund civic engagement projects in his Burlington High School classroom, as a result of his work this summer in PO 510: Nonprofit Management online class.
Darla Mallein has been appointed to the Kansas State Department of Education committee to revise the professional standards for social sciences education.
Cara Seats (History M.A. '17) is about to take a new job as an archives technician with the Johnson County Records and Tax Commission. She is also finishing up her project with the National Trails Intermountain Region, building a digital story map of the Santa Fe Trail in the Fort Larned area.
Jasmine Greene (Political Science '13) has been promoted from program assistant to program coordinator at South Dakota State University.
Adam S. Rust (History '08) is now an associate attorney at Simoncini & Associates of San Jose, California.
Matthew Parra (Political Science, '16), who is still working on his MPA at K-State, is now an associate manager at Sunflower Bank.
Government Relations
Lauren Orndorff from Dr. Roger Marshall’s Washington D.C. congressional office stopped by for a campus tour. National Teacher Hall of Fame Director Carol Strickland hosted Lauren as she and President Garrett visited the Memorial to Fallen Educators.
Publications
Dr. Marian Riedy (School of Business) published a paper titled "It Is Just Unfair Using Trade Laws to ‘Out’ Security Software Vulnerabilities” in the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal.
The first edition of Dr. Steve Lovett’s textbook, Applied Business Ethics: An Exploration of the Use and Impact of Ethical Practices in the Workplace, was published this fall and is being used as a primary textbook in BU293 – Ethics, Social Responsibility & Sustainability.
Presentations
Dr. Jun Yu and Dr. Joyce Zhou (School of Business) had a paper titled “Factors Affecting Popularity of YouTube Advertisements,” along with students Zhao Liu and Xinwei Liu, accepted for presentation at the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines (IABPAD) conference in Florida in January 2018.
Dr. Andrew Smith, associate professor in School of Library and Information Management, presented his paper, “The true art and science of the library in the age of the internet search engine,” at the Fifth International Scientific Conference: Culture and/or Science, Belgrade, Serbia in June.
