Coming to Campus

The Kansas Supreme Court will conduct a special evening session October 3 at Emporia State University in Emporia as part of its ongoing outreach to familiarize Kansans with the high court, its work, and the overall role of the Kansas judiciary.

 

National Presidential Award

Congratulations to Cherie Crisp, Crime and Delinquency Studies and president of our Alpha Kappa Delta Sociology Honor Society! Crisp, who works as a health services assistant in our Student Wellness Center earned the President's Volunteer Service Award, an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and is administered by Points of Light.

 

Business

The officers of Beta Alpha Psi, Kalyn Meseke, Courtney Renfro, Aubrey Plankinton, and Bryan Jones, conducted the chapter's Fall initiation ceremony on August 31.  Participating in the ceremony were Garrett Stout, Lane White, Jason Kuehl, Addie Lackey, and ChenChen Shi.  Also initiated but not pictured was Anan Xu. Beta Alpha Pi is an honorary service organization for accounting, information systems, and finance majors. 

Marketing Club students led a drive to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey last week. Donation boxes were placed in various locations around campus to gather donations. The students had a great turnout of donations across campus. Thank you to everyone who gave!

Congratulations to our two MBA students Shiyu Zhu and Zhao Liu for receiving the ESU new graduate student scholarship and the ESU graduate student research grant, respectively. 

Dr. Lei Wen and Dr. Joyce Zhou attended the new Chinese student orientation hosted by Chinese Student and Scholar Association to answer business major related questions.

The School of Business recently hosted two Corporate Connection sponsors, Koch Industries and Phillips 66. Students interacted with these companies in many different ways, from resume and interview tips to presentations.

  

Arts and Sciences

Congratulations to Britanie Ramirez (Sociology Major, AKD Member 2016)! She is starting her second year of her master’s program and she was recently promoted to director of street outreach services, KidsTLC in Olathe, Kansas.

Dr. Connie Schrock recently represented mathematics education for NCSM: Leadership in Mathematics Education on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight show. Schrock responded to NCSM’s position paper on Equity and Social Justice in Mathematics Education. She is the current president of the mathematics organization. 

Joyce Thierer, assistant professor of history at ESU and well-known historical reenactor, was part of the Trail Sesquicentennial in Abilene, Kansas. She was portraying Georgina Jackson, a cattle driver.  

Congratulations to Amber Vogeler (BS Sociology, 2014; MS Psychology) who is now director of the Community Developmental Disability Organization of the East Central Kansas Area Agency on Aging in Ottawa. As director, she serves the Coffey, Osage and Franklin Counties. 

The Department of Mathematics and Economics donated 50 towels and washcloths, over 200 T-shirts, a large bag of soaps, and four large bags of assorted clothes to the relief effort for Houston after Hurricane Harvey.

Congratulations to Dr. Darla Mallein, professor of social sciences, who received a professional development grant from Teaching with Primary Sources Midwest Region. Darla used the funding to create a new course at ESU.

 

Teacher’s College

The Office of Field Placement and Licensure, including Andra Baldwin, Mary Benjamin, Shannon Hall, and Debra Rittgers, won the Center for Student Involvement’s office decorating contest to show Hornet pride.

Dr. Ken Weaver, dean of The Teachers College, was interviewed on KCUR public radio in Kansas City for an article on teacher salaries

 

Graduate 

The Graduate School has published its newest edition of Quest magazine. 

 

Athletics

Emporia State's Braxton Marstall has been named the MIAA Football Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 435 yards and four touchdowns in the Hornets 45-13 win over Nebraska-Kearney. 

Emporia State's Yuchen Du has been named the MIAA Volleyball Hitter of the Week after leading the Hornets to a 3-1 record at the SBU Invitational.

 

Presentations

Dr. Kevin Rabas presented his talk “Finding the Extraordinary in the Ordinary” at Sharon Springs Public Library on August 10 as Kansas Poet Laureate.

Dr. William Jenson was invited to present “Grassland bird responses to grazing in CRP grasslands” at the Central Flyway National Migratory Bird Technical Committee meeting August 28 and 29 in Manhattan.

Libby Schmanke, clinical instructor of art therapy, recently published “Art Therapy and Substance Abuse: Enabling Recovery from Alcohol and Other Drug Addiction” (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, August 21, 2017).
