Emporia State University recently named its new Aquatic Research and Outreach Center for Dr. Carl W. Prophet, who first experienced Emporia State’s high-impact learning practices more than 60 years ago as a student in biological sciences.
Constitution Day
Over 900 students learned about the U.S. Constitution and their rights as U.S. citizens on September 18. Special guest speaker, Gen. Richard Myers, president of Kansas State University, gave a great presentation. Thank you to all the faculty and students who helped with the event!
Arts and Sciences
Drs. Carlos Peroza and Melissa Bailey represented the master of science in forensic science program at the Kansas Bureau of Investigation last week during National Forensic Science Week.
The Stingers dance team returns to campus with the Emporia State Athletic Bands. They will perform during the Emporia Marching Hornets pregame show and during basketball season!
Dr. Luisa Perez, professor in English, Modern Languages, and Journalism, developed the Self-Evaluation Rubric for Advance Low Level with Dr. Manuela Gonzalez-Bueno of KU. The tool can be used to college students preparing to teach foreign languages to evaluate their own skill level. Learn more…
Micaela Gónzalez won the first national piano competition that the Comité Paraguay-Kansas sponsored last March, and was given a fully paid semester at ESU. She studied with Professor Martin Cueller. As a capstone project, Micaela will perform a concert on Sunday.
The ESU Percussion group attended an event on September 16-17, at Friends University, to play the Environmental Masterpiece Inuksuit, created by Pulitzer Prize Winner John Luther Adams. They performed Sunday morning at the Autumn Arts Festival at Bradley Fair in Wichita. The ESU students will be performing the piece again in Lawrence on Sunday.
Business
BizHornets enjoyed a cookout before the first home football game on September 7. This tradition is very popular among our students, staff and faculty.
Students enjoyed some virtual reality recently when Dr. Joyce Zhou incorporated it in her marketing classes. Dr. Anna Catterson, educational technology coordinator, helped with the demonstration in IT.
Community and Business Enhancement tours are being offered soon for ESU students and the community. This is your opportunity to explore downtown, learn about potential careers, and earn Main Street bucks! There are eight business and four dates on the schedule.
Alumni Relations
Emporia State University once again provided a strong presence at the Kansas State Fair. Thank you to all the volunteers who staffed ESU’s booth throughout the 10-day fair, and special thanks to John and Barbara Summervill for hosting the annual Summervill Fan Fair event!
Congratulations to the Podrebarac family who received the 2017 Hornet Heritage Family award. It is sponsored by the ESU Alumni Association and recognizes a multigenerational family of alumni and former students who have maintained close relationships with Hornet Nation.
ESU hosted its first Corporate Advisory Board meeting on Friday, September 15. This group is comprised of both external and internal partners who are working together to position the university’s programs and graduates to bring needed skills to industry and the workforce.
The Teacher’s College
iStation training professional development for ESU faculty was offered September 22. The State of Kansas contracted with iStation to provide this program to schools free of charge for the next two years. ESU students will be using this in their classrooms and student teaching experiences.
The nomination portfolio criteria for the Kansas Master Teacher now focuses on teachers’ impact on their students’ learning within the context of their learning community.
Dr. Dan Stiffler, chair of School Leadership/Middle and Secondary Teacher Education and president of the Association of Teacher Educators of Kansas, will serve on the selection committee for the 2018 Kansas Teacher of the Year award. Also invited to serve is Henry Weiner, junior secondary education major from Sterling, Kansas.
Student Government
Associated Student Government (ASG) is successfully advocating for student involvement and voice.

Presentations
Kathy Landwehr, Jared Burton and Julie Cayton presented “First Generation — Building a Foundation for Success,” at the Summit on Access, Persistence and Completion. The session included how and why the First Gen Initiative started at ESU, the collaboration with Student Advising Center, TRIO, the ESU First Generation Advisory Council and programming/activities.
Ellen Hansen presented a paper on applied feminist research at a symposium in honor of the late Dr. Helen K. Henderson. The event took place in the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology, Department of Anthropology, at the University of Arizona on September 8, 2017.
Publications
Dr. Dan Colson’s article “Propaganda and the Deed: Anarchism, Violence, and the Representational Impulse”, was recently published in American Studies.
Jessica Stallings, associate professor of art therapy, co-wrote a study, “Discovering good practice for art therapy with children who have Autism Spectrum Disorder: The results of a small-scale survey,” published in The Arts in Psychotherapy, July 2017.
