Athletics
Emporia State had four players earn All-MIAA recognition in women’s soccer following a vote of the league coaches. Seniors Jaide Allenbrand and Yadira Rivera both earned third-team honors while sophomore Maria Walden and freshmen Tanna Benefiel were named honorable mention.
In the final cross country race of her career Emporia State’s Emily Schoenfeld laced 12th overall and was the third MIAA runner at the NCAA Central Regional Championships on Saturday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Hornet wide receiver Mitchell Foote led a group of 17 players that earned All-MIAA recognition for the playoff bound Emporia State football team. He was joined on the All-MIAA first-team by teammates Jarret Stastny and Eddie Vinson.
Arts & Sciences
Dr. James Aber, professor of physical science, will be working at Little Jerusalem (a geological Chalk Badland site in western Kansas). This land, once privately owned, is now being opened for research. Dr. Aber is one of the first individuals who has been granted access by the Nature Conservancy. He will take students from the ES 555 Small Format Aerial Photography course to investigate the site.
Congratulations to Joyce Thierer, professor of history, is one of five women to be inducted into the Kansas Cowboy Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Alumna Kristy Magee (BFA Theatre 2004) is career development director and coordinator at Mount Aloysius College where she also produced the recent theater show “Love, Loss, and What I Wore.”
Justine Becker (Biology M.S. 2016, advisor Dr. Brent Thomas) recently accepted a position as Biology Lab Manager in the Biology Department at the University of Detroit Mercy.
Michael Smith, professor and chair of Social Sciences, kept busy on Election Night. He provided commentary at midday on KAKE-TV in Wichita and from 7 to 10 p.m. that night for Kansas Public Radio.
Kevin Rabas, professor of English and chair of English, Modern Languages, and Journalism; and Ed Emmer, associate professor of Philosophy, joined local pastor Andrew McHenry for a panel on death and dying moderated by Ellen Hansen, professor of geography.
Alumnus Judge Michael Powers (BSE Social Sciences ‘77) did a great job speaking to the students of PO 322, State and Local Government and Politics, recently. Judge Powers is on the bench in the Eighth Judicial District of the Kansas District Court.
Around 70 Hispanic middle school students from across Kansas came to campus October 29 for this year’s SI Se Puede STEM outreach program. Workshops were led by Hispanic professionals from the state including ESU’s Dr. Claudia Aguirre-Mendez, Dr. Susan Aber, Dr. Jorge Ballester and Dr. Carlos Peroza. ESU HALO students also took the students on a campus tour.
Library & Information Management
Mary Brownback, Kansas first lady, visited Wooseob Jeong, dean of the School of Library and Information Management, to discuss the Kansas Book Festival. Mrs. Brownback was welcomed to campus by President Allison Garrett.
SLIM Utah student Paul Wilcox recently received the Ruth L. Newbold scholarship from ESU’s Graduate School. The Ruth L. Newbold scholarship is awarded to “provide financial support for creative activities and research at the master’s degree level.” SLIM congratulates Paul, and has matched the scholarship.
The Teachers College
Ceara Shaughnessy, director of community counseling services, is presently overseeing implementation of electronic health records training software for counseling students and the transition to electronic health records at CCS. Our practicum students will begin training for the technological recordkeeping aspects of a counseling career this Spring 2017.
Last month, first year graduate Art Therapy students made the annual pilgrimage to the Topeka Zoo. Because the elephants are adjusting to two new friends, this year we painted with the lions as we explored adaptive and developmental approaches to art therapy.
The Student Art Therapy Organization coordinated two book-themed art projects at the annual William Allen White Book Awards event on Saturday, October 1; more than 300 students from across Kansas participated.
On October 27, Rep. Don Hill and Art Therapy faculty hosted a luncheon on campus for legislators to introduce the Kansas Art Therapy License initiative.
The Earl Center was the site of the Kansas Counseling Association Fall Board Meeting on November 2 and school counseling faculty were hosts for the annual School Counseling Conference at the Memorial Union on November 3, followed by a KACES meeting.
Wyandotte High School in the Kansas City, Kansas, school district was one of two schools recognized by the National PTA as a School of Excellence during the October meeting of the state board of education in Topeka. The principal at Wyandotte is Mary Stewart, who is a graduate of Emporia State University.
International Education
Emporia State University are joining U.S.-wide international education celebrations this week. International Education Week is an opportunity for the ESU campus to celebrate the benefits of international and cultural exchanges. The OIE will host a series of events, including study abroad fairs, cultural displays, student forums and the international tea party. Events are free and everyone is welcome!
International recruitment efforts took Emporia State University to new student markets including countries like Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Georgia and Taiwan.
Alumni Relations
Congratulations to ESU Ambassador Barret Koch, a psychology major from Salina. Barret is a member of the first-ever CASE Affiliated Student Advancement Programs District Cabinet.
The Alumni Association hosted an ESU Night at the Boulevard Brewery on Thursday, Nov. 3. The evening included a check presentation from the Kansas City Alumni Chapter, which raised $10,518.12 during its most recent golf tournament. All proceeds from the tournament benefit the KC Alumni fund that provides scholarships to students from the Kansas City metro area.
On November 6, the Alumni Association’s Northeast Kansas Chapter hosted a pre-game gathering for Hornet fans prior to the ESU vs. KU game at Allen Fieldhouse.
On Oct. 26, ESU Alumni and Foundation staff members partnered with ESU Tennis to stuff bags full of food for students in Emporia who need food during the weekends as part of the Food for Students program.
Over 30 ESU alumni and friends enjoyed a recent trip to Maine. The event was hosted by ESU alumnus and former faculty member Don Miller and his wife Linda.
The ESU Alumni Association hosted A Hero’s Homecoming: An All Veterans Appreciation Luncheon on Saturday, November 12. The event featured ESU distinguished alumnus, retired Major Gen. Kevin Leonard, who also was the featured speaker at the community’s memorial service on November 11. All veterans were recognized and presented with special ESU coins. Plus, Quilts of Valor were presented to the following ESU alumni: Col. Guy Beougher ‘80, Lt. Col. Lee Hoskins ‘80 & ‘81, and Col. David Thompson ‘80.
Business
Dr. John Rich held an etiquette dinner for his Professional Development and Leadership for Accounting Majors class. Also attending were business students from Emporia, Hartford, Olpe, and Northern Heights high schools. The lunch was championed by Tim and Kristi Wright. June Coleman, director of Career Services, provided students with tips and techniques that would be useful in a business type setting.
The School of Business Alliance held its annual meeting recently. The council represents a wide cross section of leadership and meets to address issues of importance to the School of Business and to provide insight and help with assessing the school’s programs and activities. This group considers and responds regularly to the appropriateness of the School of Business mission and other strategic decisions.
Publications
Miranda Ericsson, current student in School of Library and Information Management, co-wrote a book with four other scholars. Three of them are connected to the ESU SLIM program. Dr. Robert J. Grover formerly served as a university administrator and professor emeritus in SLIM. Dr. Kelly Visnak is scholarly communications librarian at the University of Texas at Arlington. Formerly, she acted as the director of the SLIM Denver office. Carmaine Ternes is a retired high school librarian, a 2000 SLIM graduate, and member of the Emporia State University planning committee for the Summer Institute for School Librarians. Ericsson is a public service specialist at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library and a contributor to that library’s “Book Blog.” The fifth author is Lissa Staley, a public services librarian at Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, and the Topeka Municipal Liaison with National Novel Writing Month.
Presentations
Dr. Kenneth Thompson, Professor, ESU Department of Physical Sciences, and Dr. Mirah Dow, Professor, ESU School of Library and Information Management, presented “An In-progress Co-teaching Project: Developing Information, Technology, and Scientific Literacy” on October 27 at the 2016 National Co-teaching Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their co-teaching project is funded in part by the Institute of Museums and Library Services, 21st Century Laura Bush Library Grant.
Cara Codney, clinical instructor in the Intensive English Program, presented at the Mid-America Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages conference in Kansas City, Missouri on teaching English learners to be more assertive and respond to assertiveness in conversation.
On October 26-28, Dr. Eric Trump and Dr. Qiyang Zhang attended the Midwest Regional Meeting of the American Chemistry Society hosted by Kansas State University. Under the supervision of Dr. Diane Nutbrown, Josue Mejia (BMB), Andy Renteria (BMB) and Kelly Schwinghamer (BMB) presented their undergraduate research.
Dr. Lendi Bland presented a poster at the International Leadership Association’s 18th Annual Global Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, November 2-5. The poster was titled “ESU Students Apply Leader-Member Exchange Theory.”
Dr. Clint Stephens presented a workshop on “Sharing Best Practices in Leadership Assessment” at the International Leadership Association’s 18th Annual Global Conference in Atlanta, Georgia November 2-5.
Three Counselor Education faculty attended the Tilford Conference on Diversity at Pittsburg State University on October 25 and initiated an interactive art experience for conference participants.

Department of Psychology faculty including Dr. Cathy Grover, Dr. Kelly McEnerney, and Dr. Jim Persinger attended a joint conference of the Nebraska Psychology Society and Psychological and Educational Research in Kansas, held in Bellevue, Nebraska, November 4-5.
Art therapy program faculty and students participated in the Kansas Art Therapy Association annual conference October 21-22 at Union Station in Kansas City, Missouri.
Art therapy Faculty participated in the American Art Therapy Association (AAA) Assembly of Chapters Meeting on Saturday, October 15.
Art therapy faculty participated in the NorCATA Board Meeting on Sunday, October 16.
On Nov. 7, School of Business students Kaiyuan Wu, Holly Clark, Joslyn Barton and Taylor Sutherland attended the AAF-KC’s Spark KC Conference (American Advertising Federation), a one-day, advertising career-focused conference where students can learn more about the KC advertising industry, hear about trends in marketing, have their portfolios and resumes reviewed and network with local professionals.
