Congratulations to Katelyn Dorrell, an MA thesis student with a creative writing focus. Her paper, “To People Who Look at the Stars and Wish: Androgyny and Power in Young Adult Fantasy,” was accepted into the 2017 Pippi to Ripley Conference which will be held April 21-22 at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York.

Emporia State Lady Hornet guard Addie Lackey has earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for her work in the classroom and on the basketball court. She is now eligible to earn Academic All-America honors. Learn more…
The Emporia State men's cross country team earned All-Academic honors while Emily Schoenfeld of the Hornet's women's cross country team was named an individual All-Academic performer by the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Learn more…
Government Relations
On Wednesday, February 9, President Garrett presented ESU’s 2018-2019 budget proposal to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Higher Education. Her presentation included examples of ESU’s excellence, an overview of proposed residential projects and an explanation of needed nursing funding. Several ESU grads lent their support during the proposal, including Reps. Stan Frownfelter and Susie Swanson, (former) Rep. Vern Swanson and Mark Schreiber.
Alumni Relations
ESU mourns the loss of two dedicated Hornets. Harry Taylor (’68 & ’72), a current alumni board member, passed away on January 25. Dennis “D.W.” Donahoo (’72), an immediate past alumni board member, passed on February 2. Our deepest sympathies are extended to the family, friends, and the Hornet Nation on the loss of these two alumni leaders.
The ESU Alumni Association, with the League of Women Voters of Emporia and the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce, hosted the Lyon County-area Legislative Dialogue at the Sauder Alumni Center on Saturday, February 11, with local state legislators attending.

Dr. Carol Russell, professor of Early Childhood Development, participated in the Ellen Plumb’s Kansas Day Author Showcase 2017 at Ellen Plumb's City Bookstore in Emporia on January 29, sharing her book, “Sandwiched! Tales, Tips, and Tools to Balance Life in the Sandwich Generation.”
Dr. Heather Caswell, an assistant professor in Early Childhood Development, through the Flint Hills Writing Project, was recently awarded a $20,000 grant for a year-long Advanced Institute focusing on the National Writing Project College-Ready Writers Program.
In January, Corky’s Career Closet opened as a place where elementary and secondary education majors at Emporia State can have access to free, gently used professional attire for interviews and everyday teaching. Learn more…

Business
The Elevator Challenge and the Emporia Entrepreneur Challenge are under way. The competitions are open to ESU and Flint Hills Technical College students with over $4,500 in cash prizes awarded.
Marketing Club members participated in the Chamber Business After Hours event at Dynamic Discs on February 2.
The School of Business is excited to enhance the offerings of The Teacher's College Career Closet by adding an additional site in Memorial Union, which will be available to all majors across campus.
Bob Agler, ESU School of Business alum, was honored at the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting in January with the Lifetime Achievement award.
Library & Information Management
A plaque honoring Geraldine Strader (BSE, 1957; MLS, 1967) has been added to White Library that honors Strader for her contributions to breaking barriers for African-American women.
Publications
“Art Therapy and Substance Abuse: Enabling Recovery from Alcohol and Other Drug Addiction”, a manuscript written by Libby Schmanke, a clinical instructor in the Department of Counselor Education, will be published in September 2017 by Jessia Kingsley Publishers, Ltd.
“Z Scores,” an article written by David Westfall, instructor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Crime and Delinquency Studies, was accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed The SAGE Encyclopedia of Educational Research, Measurement, and Evaluation.
Presentations
Dr. Steven Lovett, School of Business, was a featured panelist at a National Business Instituteconference, presenting course materials I authored, entitled, “Text Messages and Smartphones: Applying Real-Life Strategies” and “Ethics of Evidence,” on January 27 in Overland Park, Kansas.
Conferences
Dr. Annie Opat, Dr. Roger Caswell, and Dr. Heather Caswell attended the 2017 National Reading Recovery & K-6 Literacy Conference in late January in Columbus, Ohio. All five of the Kansas Reading Recovery® Teacher Leaders attended, in addition to five Kansas Reading Recovery teachers who received scholarships to the conference.
