Kansas Gov. Jeff Colyer signed a proclamation recognizing the first national memorial in Kansas, the National Memorial to Fallen Educators.Joining him were Carol Strickland, executive director of the National Teachers Hall of Fame; Rep. Mark Schreiber; Rep. Fred Patton; Angie Schreiber, NTHF Trustee; and Ken Weaver, dean of The Teachers College and chair of the NTHF Board of Trustees. The memorial on the ESU campus will be rededicated in a ceremony at 2 p.m. June 21.
Arts & Sciences
Congratulations to Cinthya Saldana, who graduated in May with her master of science degree in forensic science. She is a Fulbright scholar from Colombia now working at the Forensic Laboratory for Investigative Entomological Sciences at Texas A&M University. Cinthya wants to develop the knowledge of forensic entomology in her native country.
Dr. Erika C. Martin, ESU biologist, is hard at work developing field testing for a biology lab manual for students with visual impairments, the first ever created. Erika worked with Whitney Davidson, an expert in early childhol general and special education. The manual will be published by American Printing House for the Blind.
Congratulations to Dr. Kip Wedel (MA world history, 1989) who received the Ralph P. Schrag Distinguished Teaching Awardat Bethel College. Kip has taught at Bethel for six years. After graduating from ESU, he earned his Ph.D. in American history from K-State.
Rebecca Thornton, a May 2018 graduate in forensic science, starts her new job this summer as a drug chemistwith the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The 19th annual MASTER-IT program brought 14 middle school young women to campus June 3-7. The residential summer program gave the girls an opportunity to meet and interact with female professionals in STEM careers and take part in hands-on projects from those areas of study. The program is directed by Dr. Marvin Harrell and Dr. Betsy Yanik from the Department of Mathematics and Economics. Dr. Adelaide Ackers, Dr. Melissa Bailey and Dr. Brenda Koerner also helped. Four female ESU mathematics majors served as counselors and mentors to the girls as well.
Library & Information Management
A group of 10 students recently returned from a trip to Serbiawith Dr. Andrew Smith, associate professor. During their travels, the group visited numerous libraries throughout the city of Belgrade. Dr. Smith send back daily briefings, which are available online at www.emporia.edu/news.
The Wichita Area Library Associationelected officers at the WALA Annual Meeting in April. Josh Pearson, a health and human performance major preparing for a career in physical therapy, joins the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Center’s summer scholars programwhere he will work on several collaborative projects.
Boshner Whitaker (BSE - Physical Education, 2014) was interviewed for “Low pay, teacher shortages create recruiting challenges in Kansas” which ran in the May 30, 2018 edition of the Topeka Capital-Journal.
Josh Greaves (BS, Secondary Education - Art, 2011) received recognition as an “All Means All Star”by the Shawnee Mission School District in May. See the video…
The late Gerald Christensen (BSE 1959, MS 1964) will be inducted posthumously into the Topeka Shawnee County Sports Council Hall of Fameon June 28. He coached the Topeka Thunderbolt Track Club from 1965 until 2009. He died in May 2017.
Coming soon — the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation will host three state conferences during the fall 2018 semester. Kansas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (KAHPERD), the Kansas Athletic Trainers Society (KATS), and the Kansas National Strength and Conditioning Association (KS NSCA) will all bring members to campus.

Baseball
Accolades continue for right fielder Bryce Fischer and pitcher Seth Holman. Both were named First-Team American Baseball Coaches Association Rawlings All-Central Region,giving them the trifecta of post-season all-region honors. They previously were named to the D2CCA and NCBWA First-Team All-Central Region teams. On the national level, Fischer earned Third-Team National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-American honors while Holman was named honorable mention All-American.
Bryce Fischer also was named an ABCA/Rawlings Second-Team All-Americanto go with his earlier All-American nods from the D2CCA and NCBWA. He is the only player from the MIAA to earn All-America honors from the three major organizations that give out the award.
Track & Field
Taysean Goodwin set two school recordsin the 400m during the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina. During prelims, Goodwin ran 46.71, breaking teammate Due Tibbs’ record from the 2016 NCAA Championships. During the finals, Goodwin ran 46.30, breaking his own record and placing sixth at the championships. Goodwin earned All-American honors at the championships.
The championships in North Carolina concluded the seasonfor eight ESU athletes. Taysean Goodwin placed sixth in the 400m and 12th in the 200m (21.25 seconds). The men’s 4x400m relay team of Parker Evans, Luke Stenzel, Duke Tibbs and Goodwin had the second-fastest time in prelims (3:08.78) but was disqualified for stepping on a lane line. For the women, Hannah Shields placed 17th in the 100m (12.09 seconds) and Lati Yeargin placed 23rd with a time of 12.40 seconds.
Emporia State hurdler Wyatt Sander earned Academic All-Districthonors as presented by CoSIDA. He is now eligible to move onto the Academic All-America ballot. He is a D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award winner, an MIAA Scholar-Athlete and is on both the MIAA Academic and ESU Athletic Director Honor Rolls.
Six ESU returning student-athletes earned MIAA Scholar-Athletehonors. They are Kenzie Garvin and Danielle Sprinkle, softball; Payson Maydew and Luke Stenzel for men’s track and field; and Brianna Schmitz and Hannah Shield for women’s track and field. MIAA Scholar-Athlete status is awarded to those student-athletes that maintain a 3.50 cumulative GPA in at least two terms of attendance and earn All-MIAA honors in their sport.

Congratulations to Luke Palmer (BSB Accounting and Information Systems, 2018), who will be inducted in the Sigma Tau Gamma Noble Man Hall of Fame during the fraternity’s Grand Conclave in Phoenix June 28-30. All 10 inductees are now finalists for the Sigma Tau Gamma’s Ellsworth C. Dent Undergraduate Man of the Year.

Dr. Keith Pfannenstiel, assistant professor in health, physical education and recreation, co-wrote “Effects of Resistance Exercise Training on Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity” in the June 2018 Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology.
Presentations
Dr. Emily Vardell, assistant professor in SLIM, won second place in the My Favorite Tool presentation contest at the Medical Library Associationconference in Atlanta, Georgia, for her presentation on PollEverywhere and its use to support flipped classroom activities.
