National Award

Congratulations to Allie Crome, secondary education student and managing editor of The Bulletin this fall. Allie was selected in early August as one of the recipients of the Journalism Education Association’s Future Journalism Teacherscholarships. She will receive $1,000 to help her with her degree. The scholarship will be awarded to her at the Journalism Education Association/ National Scholastic Press Association national high school journalism convention in Chicago in November.

Making Progress

Thanks to three significant gifts this summer, the third granite book for the National Memorial to Fallen Educators is ordered. Another $20,000 is needed to pay for the work.

 

On Exhibit

A touring exhibit about children’s book illustrator Robert McCloskey features more than 60 pieces from the May Massee Collectionin ESU’s University Archives and Special Collections. The exhibit opened at the Cincinnati Art Museum last month. ESU Assistant Archivist Shari Scribner attended the opening. 

 

Business

Five School of Business students placed in the Top 10 in the nation at the 2018 Phi Beta LambdaNational Leadership Conference held in Baltimore, Maryland, last month. At the conference, Karoline Kennedy received two first-place finishes — one in Business Presentation and one in Public Speaking. Four other students placed: Rob Lara – fifth, Impromptu Speaking; Carolina Taylor – sixth, Cost Accounting; Ashley Rietcheck and Madison Orrange – eighth, Accounting Analysis & Decision Making. 

AACSB reaccreditation celebrations have been on the road. The first event was in Emporia on May 3, followed by Topeka on June 26, Wichita on June 27 and Kansas City on July 31. Emporia State’s School of Business has been accredited since 2002 by AACSB, an organization synonymous with the highest standards in business education and has been earned by less than 5 percent of the world’s business schools.

In June, ESU hosted an ESU-KII alumni event at Koch Industriesin Wichita. President Allison Garrett provided an update on the happenings around campus, and the Koch Center shared its vision of humanized business education and outreach. School of Business leaders took the opportunity to thank founding donors and present Kim Penner with a University Service Citation Award. 

On July 19, Office of International Education, Chinese Students and Scholars Association and Dr. Joyce Zhou participated in a virtual orientationto incoming students in China.

  

Arts & Sciences

The first ESU String Campbrought 18 students entering sixth through 12th grade to Beach Music Hall on August 8-11. The camp focused upon improving students’ proficiency in several key areas of musical development. These included activities for the development of repertoire, technique, musicianship, solo and ensemble playing. String camp concluded with a student concert on August 12. 

Congratulations to Dr. Ramiro Miranda. At the conclusion of the Nadia Boulanger Institutein Paris, France, he was awarded a special mention in counterpoint, harmony and solfege. Ramiro was one of only two students to receive mention in all three disciplines.

Fourteen students from Emporia and Olpe attended the Inspired by Math campJuly 23 through 27. Students designed a rocket model, learned cryptography, played a breakout game and worked on American Mathematic Competition 8 problems. The camp was taught by Qiang Shi and Song Yang from Emporia State University and Laura Albertson and Ashely Burkett from Emporia Middle School.

Congratulations to Nicole Gomric, junior photography and graphic design major, whose piece “Soundwaves” was the first to be featured in a new public art effort. The piece was displayed at 9 E. Sixth Ave., in Emporia as part of the Student Artist Showcase sponsored by Emporia Main Street. 

 

Athletics

Congratulations to Kirsten Ford (BS Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2011; MBA, 2013) on her promotion to associate commissionerof the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Kirsten played tennis for ESU and worked as an operations assistant in ESU Athletics.

Six Emporia State track and field athletes earned United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic honorsfor the 2017-18 school year. In addition, the Emporia State women's team earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team recognition.  

 

The Teachers College

Graduate art therapy student Kaitlyn Ekart-Eliot’s exhibit is currently being shown at Emporia’s Gravel City Roasters.

The art therapy program received a significant donation of sand tray therapy materials from Dr. Jane Sharp of Lawrence.

Dr. Damara Paris, counselor education, earned her Master Reviewer Certificationin Quality Matters over the summer.

In Fall 2018 the Department of Counselor Education is offering a revised master’s in Clinical Counseling, with concentrations available in addictions counseling, clinical mental health counseling and clinical rehabilitation counseling.

Dr. Melissa Reed received the Teaching Innovation Award in July at the Professors of Literacy and Teacher Education special interest group at the International Literacy Association Annual Conference in Austin, Texas.

Early childhood and elementary faculty Carol Russell, Beth Dobler, Heather Caswell, and Jennie Long along with library and archives faculty Terri Summey and Shari Scribner and Kansas Masonic Literacy Center director Dennis Kear hosted childhood literacy professor Mereia Canals from the University of Vic in Barcelona, Spain, for a one-day international exchange.  

Congratulations to Sarah Lucero (BSE elementary education 2005), who was named a Topeka 2018 Women of Influencefor Education. 

 

Library & Information Management

The Overland Park 802 class with Dr. Brendan Fay and Dr. Emily Vardell enjoyed a tour of the Midwest Genealogy Center Libraryin July. It was an opportunity for students to see a top-notch genealogy facility first-hand and hear about some of the important reference work that the staff does there. 

A group of students from Yeungnam University, Korea,visited SLIM on July 23. They are currently enrolled in ESU’s Intensive English Program. Dean Wooseob Jeong’s family provided them with Korean foods and had a great time.

Publications

“Frontline Education: The Role of Fort Leavenworth officers in the American Expeditionary Forces General Staff and the Army General Staff College during and after World War I” by Thomas Richardson (MA History, 2015) has been accepted into theIke Skelton Combined Arms Research Library at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. 

Dr. Mingchu Neal Luo, School Leadership / Middle and Secondary Teacher Education, research article “ESL teachers’ multiple intelligences and teaching strategies: Is there a linkage?” was published in July in TESOL Journal.

Derek Yonai published “Raking up Rents: Cambridge University Press v. Patton” in Interdisciplinary Journal of Economics and Business Law.

Dr. Jun Yu presented a paper titled “Students’ Experience and Perceptions of an Online Introductory Marketing Course” at the 2019 International Conference on Distance Education and Learningheld in Beijing, China. He also chaired the session on Learning Methods and Techniques.  

Dr. Emily Vardell (Assistant Professor SLIM) co-wrote a paper titled “Health insurance literacy: A mixed methods study of college students,” published last month in the Journal of American College Health. 

Dr. Michael Widdersheim’s (Assistant Professor SLIM) article “Historical case study: A research strategy for diachronic analysis” was published in Library & Information Science Research. 

Dr. Joyce Zhou’s papers titled “Marketing & Library: A Case Study of an Academic Library in a Mid-West University” (co-authored by SLIM faculty Dr. Jim Walter, Dr. Sandra Valenti, and business graduate student Tingxuan Lu) and “Virtual Reality Applications in an IMC Class” (co-author by Dr. Jun Yu, Dr. Anna Catterson, and Dr. Charlie Jiang) have been accepted for presentation at the 2018 Marketing Management Association Fall Educators’ Conference this fall in Kansas City.

Dr. Joyce Zhou’s paper titled “Chinese Parents’ Gender-Role Attitudes toward Their Young Child in Entertainment Market” has been accepted for presentation at the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplinesconference this fall in Las Vegas. The co-authors are Dr. Jun Yu, Zhao Liu (business graduate student), and Xinwei Liu (psychology/business undergraduate student).

 

Presentations

On August 9, Dr. Jim Walther (Assistant Professor, School of Library and Information Management) delivered the keynote address at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Northeast Kansas Library Systemin Lawrence Kansas. His speech "Free Speech in an Information-Overloaded World" focused on the evolving changes in the American Library Association's directives on how to use public meeting spaces in libraries. libraries.

Dr. Mark Stanbrough presented “Mental Skills and Drills to Enhance Running Performance” at the Science of Coachingworkshop sponsored by the University of Wisconsin at Madison. 

Dr. Carol Russell, Dr. Heather Caswell, both of Elementary Education / Early Childhood / Special Education, and Mr. Fletcher Russell collaboratively presented: “The Children Inspire Glass Project at Emporia State University: An interdisciplinary group of university faculty and students work with children to create stories and design creatures to be transformed into glass sculpture” at the International Arts in Society Conferencein Vancouver, British Columbia, on June 29, 2018.

Dr. Lendi Bland, Elementary Education / Early Childhood / Special Education, presented a roundtable session at the Activate: Conference for Leadership Developersheld by the Kansas Leadership Center in Wichita June 21-23. The title of her session was “Leadership Challenges in an Undergraduate Setting: Using Adaptive and Technical Strategies.”  

In July, Dr. Derek Yonai presented "Markets and Morality" to teachers from across Kansas at an event hosted by the Kansas Council for Economic Educationin conjunction with Wichita State University’s and ESU's Centers for Economic Education.

In July, Dr. Derek Yonai spoke at the Southern Business Administration Association Workshopin Nashville. He spoke to a group of over 35 business deans and administrators about creating an impactful free enterprise program. 

In June, Dr. Derek Yonai taught “Markets and Morality” to Texas teachers in Aledo, Texas, as part of theTeaching Free Enterprise project at the O’Neil Center at SMU. In the afternoon, he taught them “Trade and Culture.” In Amarillo, he taught the teachers his module, “Trade and Culture.”

Dr. Michael M. Widdersheim (School of Library and Information Management) presented on July 23 at the 25th World Congress of Political Sciencein Brisbane, Australia. His paper was titled “The Circulation of Power: A New Proposed Model.”

Three undergraduate students recently presented at the 7th Biennial National IDeA Symposium of Biomedical Research Excellencein Washington D.C. Poster presentations of their K-INBRE-funded work were given by Savannah Bender (Jr, Biology) — “Examination of small intestine mucosal immunity after blocking IL-2 signaling at birth”; Bailey Lampton (B.S. Biology 2018) — “Characterization of the Effect of Melatonin on Neuronal Processes of C. elegans” and Mariah Rey (B.S. BMB 2018) — “Insertion sequences target specific locations in Halobacterium Salinarum NRC-1.” Qiyang Zhang (Faculty, Chemistry) also attended. 

Dr. Annie Opat (Director, Reading Recovery) and Christine Coulter (Teacher Leader of Reading Recovery and a reading specialist at Tonganoxie Elementary) presented “Investing in Professional Learning: The Positive Impact of Reading Recovery” at the International Literacy Association Conferenceat Austin, Texas. The pair represented the Reading Recovery Council of North America.

 

Conferences

Barret Koch, graduate student in psychology, attended Activate: Conference for Leadership Developersheld by the Kansas Leadership Center in Wichita June 21-23.
