Emporia State senior guard Kelly Moten capped her illustrious career by being named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) NCAA Division II National Player of the Year and First-Team All-American. On Tuesday, Kansas Rep. Mark Schreiber (R-Emporia) introduced Kelly on the floor of the Kansas House; she met Gov. Sam Brownback and interviewed with media outlets WIBW and KSNT TV stations and the Capital-Journal newspaper. Learn more…
Information Technology
Anna Catterson and Rob Gibson of Learning Technologies conducted a day-long Makerspace workshop at St. Mary’s University in Leavenworth. It was attended by librarians and teachers from across northeast Kansas. Topics included robotics and circuits, Raspberry Pi, lightboards, 3D printing and virtual reality.

Joella Mehrof was inducted into the North American Society of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance professionals March 16 at the 2017 SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) convention in Boston, Massachusetts.
The Flint Hills Writing Project, based in the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence, recently was awarded two grants totaling $35,000 from the National Writing Project. The grant proposals were written by Dr. Heather Caswell and Dr. Roger Caswell, co-site directors for FHWP.
Business
Richard Snook, ‘96 MS and veterans representative with Southeast Kansas Works, Dr. Joyce Zhou, Dr. Christopher Stone, and students worked on a veterans brochure and poster for a special pilot program to hire veterans who are in prison with an honorable discharge for production jobs here in Emporia. Students include Mariana Justiniano, Graphic Design; Tingxuan Lu, Information Systems; and Kaiyuan Wu, Marketing.
Kalyn Meseke and Alexandra Ewy discussed careers in accounting and information systems with Mrs. Jana Marstall’s and Mrs. Amber Pankratz’s business classes at Emporia High School on March 17. The presentation was part of “Reaching Out” community service activities for the Beta Alpha Psi honor organization.
Congratulations to Thomas Houk, MBA student, who competed in the Capitol Graduate Research Summit in Topeka and received the BioKansas Award for his research “Improved Tracking of Kansas Economic Activity.” His advisor was Dr. Marc Fusaro.
Alumni Relations
During the Council for Advancement and Support of Education District VI conference for Affiliated Student Advancement Programs, ESU Ambassadors earned three of four awards. The entries will move on to compete at the national level with winners announced in August.
Government Relations
President Allison Garrett spent time at the Kansas Statehouse, including meeting with Kansas Speaker of the House Ron Ryckman, Jr., to talk about the need for a stable block grant in higher education and to discuss ESU nursing.
Arts & Sciences
Two of our first graduates from our M.S. forensic science program already have jobs lined up. Marah Carney (BS Biology 2014) has accepted a position as a firearms examiner at the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center. Paloma Ortiz Montijo has accepted a position as a Forensic Pathology Assistant at the Shawnee County Coroner’s office in Topeka.
Library & Information Management
Recently, two sections of the course, Foundations of Library and Information Science visited the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence, Missouri. There are 47 students in the ESU-KC Spring 2017 cohort and over 100 students in the Overland Park program.
Congratulations to Brady Lund, a Master of Library Science student and STEM-All project graduate assistant, who was recently awarded scholarships by three organizations: the Kansas Museum Association Conference Scholarship; Pharmaceutical and Health Technology Division Student Travel Award by the Special Library Association; and a conference scholarship award from the American Library Association.
Congratulations to Dr. Kathy Fatkin, 2014 ESU SLIM Ph.D. graduate, who received The Frist Humanitarian Award, the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center Health Care’s highest award. She was recognized as the 2017 Nursing Excellence Professional Mentoring Honoree.
The Association of College & Research Libraries brought together, ESU Oregon MLS Director Perri Parise, former SLIM Dean Marty Hale, SLIM Dean Wooseob Jeong and Emporia MLS Director Kathie in Baltimore, Maryland. The conference convenes every other year and is an opportunity to network with 3,000 peers and colleagues at the forefront of the library field.
SLIM will have a new faculty member starting in Fall 2017. Emily Vardell will join as an assistant professor.
Publications
Dr. Bauman, Dr. Zheng, and Dr. Zhou from the School of Business co-wrote “Online Trust and Financial Performance: A Case of Online Bookstores,” which was published in the Journal of Marketing Development and Competitiveness.
SLIM Ph.D. students Amanda Harrison, Rene Burress, Sarah Velasquez and Lynnette Schreiner published ”Social Media Use in Academic Libraries: A Phenomenological Study” in The Journal of Academic Librarianship (February, 2017).
An article written by Tiffany Hill, Lori Mann, and Nancy Smith about Hornet Connected Learning is available online. “A Partnership in Preparing Preservice Teachers to Teach with Mobile Technologies” was published by the National Association for Professional Development Schools.
Presentations
Ellen Hansen will attend the annual meeting of the American Association of Geographers in Boston, where she is organizer and chair of three sessions focused on the Society of Woman Geographers. In one session, she will discuss how the Society has supported her work on gender and women’s lives.
