Congratulations to Kevin Rabas, chair of English, Modern Languages and Journalism, who was named Poet Laureate of KansasTM by the Kansas Humanities Council. Kevin will hold the position from 2017 to 2019.
Distinguished Professor
Congratulations to Patrick Martin, professor of art, who Tuesday was named the 2017 Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor, the highest faculty honor at ESU.
Research and Creativity Day
Congratulations to Dr. Yixin Eric Yang, professor and chair of the Department of Biological Sciences, who will receive the 2017 President’s Award for Research and Creativity on Thursday. The presentation is part of the annual Research and Creativity Day events.
Professional Advocacy
Congratulations to Dr. Ken Weaver, dean of The Teachers College, who received the Advocacy Award from the Kansas Association of Colleges of Teacher Education.
Arts & Sciences
Congratulations to Brian Hollenbeck, chair of the math department, who was recently installed as president of Kappa Mu Epsilon, a national math honor society, during the annual convention in Springfield, Missouri.
At the same conference, ESU alumnus Dr. Leah Childs, professor of mathematics at Pittsburg State, was installed as president-elect.
Congratulations to Murad Jalilov, a student in the social sciences department, on being accepted into the University of Oregon’s Soviet and Eastern European graduate studies program.
On April 5, Dr. Connie Schrock became the first college professor to be installed as president of National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, a mathematics leadership organization. As president, she will direct a 34-member board and serve for two years.
Logan Sleezer (B.S. Biology, B.S. Earth Science, 2016) accepted a graduate research and teaching assistantship in Virginia Tech University’s master’s program, where he will conduct research on fish and aquatic invertebrate in the New River Basin.
Justin Abel and Collin Kile, students in the earth science program, are conducting research projects using ponds in Jefferson County.
A public forum on progressivism, conservatism and the common good took place last Thursday, featuring two ESU professors, Greg Schneider and Charles Brown, and moderated by President Allison Garrett.
Business
Ten students were inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma during the School of Business Spring Honors Banquet. Students who received scholarships were also recognized for their accomplishments, along with several other organizations.
Information Technology
Anna Catterson and Rob Gibson hosted an active learning and Makerspace workshop last weekend, presenting to librarians at the Winfield High School library.
Library and Information Management
The ESU SLIM program has been added as an affiliate member to the Kansas Library Association, with Dr. Jim Walther, assistant professor, serving as the council representative. The affiliation allows ESU to facilitate a broader conversation and commitment to libraries and librarians in Kansas and beyond.
Congratulations to Rachel Fellman, an Oregon SLIM student, who received a scholarship from the Northwest Archivist Association.
Athletics
Former Emporia State running back Tyler Paul has been selected for induction into the MIAA Hall of Fame as part of the 11-member 2017 class. He is the second Hornet football player to be inducted into the MIAA Hall of Fame.
The Emporia State women's 4x100m relay and the men's Alec Garcia won championships and the Hornets picked up three provisional qualifiers at two different meets on Saturday. Latiyera Yeargin, Hannah Shield, Malacia Lee, and Jazmin Williams ran 47.25 to win the 4x100m relay at the KU Relays. Garcia had a provisional qualifier of 54-04.50 (16.57m) to win the men's shot put at the Tabor Invitational.
The Teachers College
Kimberly Nguyen, a graduate student in art therapy, is the recipient of the 2017-18 Nancy Knapp Memorial Scholarship. Nguyen’s application, an art piece and essay on the theme “Art as Healing,” was selected by a cross-disciplinary committee.
Melissa Reed, associate professor of literacy education, was recently elected to serve as the program chair of the Professors of Literacy and Teacher Education for 2017-2019; PLTE is a special interest group of the International Literacy Association, providing high-quality professional development and a mentoring environment for professionals who educate future teachers.
Melissa Reed, associate professor of literacy education, began serving on the Tomorrow’s Teachers Speak Up National Advisory Board recently. Speak Up is dedicated to ensuring students are well prepared to be tomorrow’s innovators. The Speak Up data represents the largest collection of authentic, unfiltered stakeholder input on education, technology and the data regularly used to inform federal, state and local education programs.
Clara Corn (MS – Art Therapy, 2013) was recently named interim director of Plumb Place in Emporia. The non-profit Plumb Place has been a refuge for homeless women in Lyon County since 1921.
The ESU Iota Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi (international honor society in education) hosted its annual Lace Up for Literacy Event April 8. Teams competed in an Emporia-based Amazing Race wearing Dr. Seuss-inspired costumes.
Conferences
Dr. Connie Schrock and seven ESU students attended the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics annual meeting in San Antonio, Texas. At the conference, Dr. Schrock presented a session, “I’m Not Looking for a Hero.”
Dr. Evandro Camara, associate professor of sociology, organized a session on race and ethnicity in the global context at the 2017 Midwest Sociology Society meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
SLIM Dean Wooseob Jeong and Perri Parise, the Oregon MLS director, attended the annual Oregon Library Association Conference in Salem, Oregon.
Dr. Brian Hollenbeck and Dr. Qiang Shi accompanied three mathematics students to the Kappa Mu Epsilon National Convention on April 6-8 at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri.
Presentations
Oregon SLIM students attended the poster session at the Oregon Library Association Conference 2017 and presented the poster “Collection Development: Native American Voices” by Mary Derr, Lisa Taylor, Angelica Nova DeCordeiro and Darrel Malley.
At the same conference, Oregon SLIM student Jessica Talisman presented the poster, “Nagivating the Library with Pictograms.”
Dr. Evandro Camara presented a paper, entitled “Phenomenological Aspects of Interethnic Relations: A Comparative Perspective,” at the 2017 Midwest Sociology Society meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Gaelynn Wolf Bordonaro, associate professor of art therapy, provided a keynote presentation “Non-Traditional Media and Art Therapy: Practical, Ethical and Playful” and provided the afternoon experiential session at the annual conference of the Art Therapy Association of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma on April 14.
