- The Emporia State men’s cross country team is ranked ninth and the women tenth in the 2015 MIAA Preseason Polls released today. - The new CEO at the Kansas Board of Regents, Dr. Blake Flanders, visited with Dr. Jackie Vietti and members of her cabinet for a tour of Emporia State and a discussion about upcoming events. Dr. Flanders and Dr. Vietti spoke about Emporia State’s unique programs and high impact learning experiences, Title IX, enrollment management, partnerships and legislative items. The group also talked about Emporia State’s strategic plan, “The Adaptive University,” and its changing culture as well as needed funding for the Department of Nursing.
- Kim Simons (interim chair, Physical Sciences) and Brent Thomas (Liberal Arts & Sciences dean) joined Kent Heermann and Dean Hollenbeck at the 10th Annual KC Animal Health Corridor Homecoming Dinner at the Kansas City Convention Center on Aug. 31.

- Shirley Morrow, principal fiscal analyst for the Kansas Legislature, visited Dr. Vietti and members from Fiscal Affairs. Shirley chatted about legislative requests and the upcoming legislative session.

- The Emporia Men’s Assembly of Nurses — EMAN — held its first meeting of the year. The group talked about the role of men working in the field of nursing and also how the group can help the overall Emporia State nursing effort. EMAN will be holding a fundraiser later in the year, so lend your support!
- Dr. Chris Lovett is one of the upcoming, featured speakers at Red Rocks (the William Allen White State Historic Site in Emporia). He speaks Sunday on “William Allen White: A Voice of Reason in an Age of Isolationism.”
- Hornet fans don’t have to miss any football games, even if they don’t live near Emporia or can’t travel to road games. All Emporia State football games are available on traditional radio, audio streaming and video streaming. - “The Constitution, Opportunity and the End of the American Revolution” is the topic of the Zimmerman Lecture at 6 p.m., Sept. 16, in the Preston Family Room of the Memorial Union. Lecturer Dr. Andrew M. Schocket is director of American Culture Studies and professor of history and American culture studies at Bowling Green State University. The lecture is sponsored by the Social Sciences Zimmerman Lecture Fund.
- Congratulations to Dr. Erika Martin (Biology Laboratory Coordinator) on her recently published article in Freshwater Biology. In addition, her article was co-authored with ESU alumni [Dr. James Whitney (B.S. Biology, 2007) and Kristen Hase (M.S. Biology, 1997)]! Freshwater Biology is an international-level peer-reviewed journal and the article is available online at bit.ly/1UEa9vV. Their article is based upon fieldwork conducted at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and the Konza Prairie Biological Station in the Flint Hills region of east-central Kansas.
- Dr. Joyce Thierer will perform “How do you keep them down on the farm?” — an exploration of the effect of World War I on rural farm life — at 4 p.m. Sunday at Ride Into History in Admire.
- Emporia State’s Brent Wilson threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns while Mitchell Foote had a school record 88-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Hornets 38-20 win at Missouri Southern to open the season. It is the fourth straight season opening win for the Hornets and they are now 18-7 in MIAA openers in their 25 years in the league. The Hornets play their home opener tomorrow night. - Freshmen education students were treated to an evening of popcorn and a movie on August 24. The event, sponsored by the dean of The Teachers College and the Flint Hills Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, featured a viewing of the documentary “TEACH.”
- Linda Sinnett (BSB 79 & MBA 2014), CFO at Design Resources Inc., was selected as a 2015 Women Who Means Business by the Kansas City Business Journal. - Students, faculty and staff of The Teachers College will be gathering for the college’s third annual Party on the Patio on Thursday. The event will go from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on the Visser Hall patio before the Emporia State football game against Central Missouri.
