More than 30 high school students from across the state will be attending the Kansas Future Teacher Academy June 7-11. The academy, hosted by Emporia State, has graduated more than 1,200 high school students over 26 summers. During this intense five-day program, the participants share in a variety of activities that will help them to understand better what teachers do and to determine if they have the potential for meeting the challenges of this profession.
All veterans who are eligible for federal education benefits, along with all current members of the armed forces, are now eligible for in-state tuition rates at all 32 public postsecondary colleges and universities in Kansas, effective July 1, 2015, regardless of time spent in the state. The change came last week after Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback signed into law HB 2154.
Congratulations to John Rich, who will lead the School of Business as interim dean while a national search is conducted for our next dean. John takes over July 1.
A Topeka teacher was one of five recipients in the nation to receive a scholarship for teaching reading. Nichole Kuhn, Topeka Public Schools USD 501, training at Emporia State University’s Reading Recovery Regional Training Center, received a $10,000 scholarship for her preparation. Reading Recovery teacher leaders have conducted a two-year campaign to fund a 30th Anniversary teacher leader scholarship.

Summer is the time when practicing educators learn how to implement new research, ideas and strategies into their classrooms. Corporal Jerrod Schumann of Police and Safety was a substitute sponsor for a number of ESU Crime and Delinquency studies students. Schumann accompanied the group to the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy, which offers The Collegiate Law Enforcement Academy for students who are interested in entering the law enforcement profession. These students were introduced to a number of topics including live fire weapons training, defensive tactics and hands-on emergency vehicle operation.
Dr. John Rich, John Lohmeyer and Tyler Curtis traveled to the Dallas-Fort Worth area to visit business school alumni and host an event for alumni of ESU’s School of Business. They met with alumni and friends at BNSF and Deloitte in addition to those who attended the alumni event. A very special thanks to Linda Hurt ’77, a retired VP at BNSF, for partially underwriting the alumni event!
Around 20 grade-school students from the Emporia area enjoyed a wet Biology Camp last week on campus. Each day, faculty and students in biological sciences helped with fun projects like harvesting insects, seining for fish and observing amphibians and reptiles at Ross Reservation.
Congrats to ESU alumnus Tony Dalisio (MS Biology; graduated 2-3 years ago; disciple of Bill Jensen laboratory). In addition to being an excellent biologist, Tony is also an elite runner who was named the 2015 Maine State Showshoe Champion.
Both the campus and Emporia community turned out on Memorial Day Weekend to celebrate Carol Marshall, who served the university for more than 35 years, and provided for its future upon her death on Dec. 24, 2014, through a substantial legacy gift from the Carol F. Emporia State softball senior Taylor Zordel can add to her list of honors after being named Capital One Academic All-America Division II Second-Team on Thursday. Emporia State fans continue to follow the Hornet football team as they finished 33rd in the nation in average attendance last season. It is the 17th straight season the Hornets have been in the top 50 nationally in attendance. In baseball, Emporia State center fielder Justin Harris and third baseman Dean Long can now add second-team ABCA/Rawlings All-American to their list of postseason accolades. Justin also was named to the Daktronics All-American Second Team while Dean was named to the honorable mention team as voted on by the members of D2SIDA, the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors Association. Emporia State finished the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Allendale, Mich. with two All-Americans and three more top 12 finishes. Andrew Etheridge ran 14.34 to place ninth in the 110m hurdles. Kyle Pfizenmaier threw 203-2 to place 12th in the men's javelin. Samuel Saidi cleared 6-06.75 in the men's high jump to finish in 15th place. Sara Dunkin Beam was 15th in the women's javelin at 138-03 while Elizabeth Costello threw 120-2 to place 20th in the javelin. Payson Maydew earned All-American status with a third place showing in the decathlon and Donald Wilcox placed seventh in the long jump to earn All-American honors. For more: http://bit.ly/1dC6dNX
The Alumni Association hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to thank and recognize the many volunteers who donate thousands of hours of service to advance the university and its mission. They also recognized Gary Parks, Mark and Pat Sevier,and Ron Thomas with University Service Citation Awards. The award recognizes unique and distinct service to the institution.
