Holocaust survivor Dr. Inge Auerbacher, in a visit organized by the Union Activities Council, will speak on Tuesday, Feb. 21 about her experiences in the concentration camps and life following her move to the United States.
She will speak at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 in the KSTC Ballroom of ESU’s Memorial Union.
Auerbacher was imprisoned in a Czechoslovakian concentration camp for three years during World War II. Of the 15,000 children in the camp, she was among the 1 percent who survived. Following the camp’s liberation, she moved to the United States in 1946. Auerbacher earned a degree in chemistry while in the United States and went on to work as a chemist for 38 years.
She began lecturing in 1981, teaching tolerance and human rights. Since starting, she has spoken about the Holocaust to thousands of people in the United States, Canada and Germany. Auerbacher has also received awards for her humanitarian work, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, the Louis E. Yavner Citizen Award and an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Long Island University. She has written six books, which have been published in nine languages.
