Flags lowered, moment of silence to honor Schmidt

Flags on the Emporia State campus are being flown at half-staff and a moment of silence will be observed on Monday to recognize Dr. Ethan Schmidt, a graduate who was fatally shot Monday in his office at Delta State University in Mississippi.

“Many of our faculty and staff and even current students knew Dr. Schmidt,” said Dr. Jackie Vietti, interim president of Emporia State University. “This has been a very sad, sad week on our campus, and our hearts go out to his family and friends.”

Vietti ordered flags on campus be lowered to half-staff from sunrise Saturday through sundown Monday. Saturday is Schmidt’s funeral in his hometown of Peabody, Kansas.

On Monday, the campus will observe a moment of silence at 10:15 a.m., exactly one week after Delta State officials responded to a call of a shooting in Jobe Hall.
