Today, the League of American Bicyclists recognized Emporia State University with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly University (BFUSM) award, joining more than 150 visionary colleges and universities from across the country.
With the announcement of 51 new and renewing BFUs today from 25 states, ESU joins a cutting-edge group of colleges and universities across the United States transforming their campuses and the communities around them. There are now 164 BFUs in 44 states and Washington, D.C.
“In its fifth year, we’ve seen the Bicycle Friendly University program’s momentum continue to grow and reach even more campuses across the country,” said Bill Nesper, Programs Director. “We applaud this round of BFUs for raising the standard and being innovative in making bicycling a safe, convenient and enjoyable option for students, staff and visitors alike.”
Emporia State’s new “Borrow-A-Bike” program allows students, especially those without a vehicle, to check out a bike and travel around campus and the city more easily. ESU encourages bicycling as an easy option for transportation and provides amenities such as bicycle repair stations, bicycle safety and repair workshops and incentives such as free bicycle rentals and a new bike identification program.
According to Mike Wise, director of Recreation Services at Emporia State University, we are always looking for ways to partner, and come alongside the City of Emporia.
“With the Flint Hills in our backyard, our community has made great strides in become one of the premiere cycling communities in the state, and a true cycling destination,” Wise said. “With the addition of this recognition we can show that ESU shares this vision, and that we pride ourselves in providing a safe and educated environment for our students.”
Moving forward, ESU will have access to a variety of free tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more bicycle-friendly. When colleges and universities invest in bicycling, great things happen such as decreasing carbon footprint, reduced health care costs, connecting to the Emporia community, and create a fun, safe and healthy culture.
