An expert in domestic violence will present the the 2016-17 Pflaum Memorial Lecture on Thursday, April 20.
Professor Adrianne Dennis Kunkel of the University of Kansas will present “Paradoxes and Tensions: Action Research to Empower Domestic Violence Survivors and Their Advocates” at 7 p.m. April 20 in Visser Hall 118 on the Emporia State campus. The presentation features two-award winning investigations of the stories of domestic violence survivors and the organization that serves them as a DV Center and Shelter.
The Pflaum Lecture, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Department of Communication and Theatre at Emporia State University.
Kunkel grew up in Boulder, Colorado, at the base of the gorgeous Rocky Mountain Foothills, raised largely by her incredibly supportive father, an art professor and chair at the University of Colorado. She earned her B.A. in communication with an emphasis in gender studies at CU before obtaining her M.A. and Ph.D. in interpersonal communication at Purdue University.
Hired by the University of Kansas in 1999, she has won a wide array of recognitions for her scholarship, mentorship, teaching, and advocacy for underserved communities and their members. Since earning tenure at KU, she has focused her attention and energies toward volunteering, performing action-based research, and rallying her students around the cause of preventing and surviving domestic violence.
