Chemistry Students Collecting Radon Data

Have you had your Emporia home tested for radon? Or would you like to? A group of honors chemistry students at Emporia State University would like to help.

Ashley Haas, Hernan Hernandez, Clay Martin and Ali Nasrazadani are collecting information about radon in residences in the city of Emporia. They plan to map their data and present their findings during Research and Creativity Day on April 28.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that has no odor or color. It can emanate from soil and become a health hazard by causing lung cancer.

If you’ve already had your home tested, you can enter your results for the study online at http://www.emporia.edu/radontesting/. If you’d like to test your home, go to the same site and request a free sampling kit under the Frequently Asked Questions. Testing takes seven days, and the students will pick up the kits at the end of the seven-day period.

The testing will be done by Kansas State University National Radon Program Services in Manhattan and results will be provided to homeowners.

Testing kits must be requested by Friday, April 15, so the students have time to complete their project.
