Community Partnership

Emporia State’s track and field area became the landing site for two Blackhawk helicopters flown to town by the Kansas Army National Guard. The Guard share information with community and campus members about their programs before taking guests on a short flight over Emporia.

 

All-Americans

Emporia State's Brianna Schmitz scored the sixth most points in the pentathlon in NCAA National Championship history to finish fourth at this year's Division II Indoor Championships. She had 3,820 points to earn her first All-American honor and the first in Emporia State history in the pentathlon.  

Emporia State's Carey McLeod earned All-American honors on March 8 at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & FieldChampionships in Pittsburg, Kansas. The freshman went 24-02.50 (7.38m) on his first attempt before going 24-10.50 (7.58m) on his second attempt. 

  

Headed to Washington

Congratulations to Ms. Song Yang, a computer science student who has been selected to present her project at the 2019 Posters on the Hill event in Washington D.C. This very competitive event hosted by the Council of Undergraduate Research selected 60 projects from more than 350 submitted. Dr. Qiang Shi is Yang’s faculty research partner.

 

Arts & Sciences

Four high school studentsfrom Chase County and Northern Heights high schools visited ESU’s Science Hall on February 28. They toured the mathematics department and visited the Human Anatomy and Physiology lab, Chemistry lab, and Physics and Robotics labs. The visit was hosted by Dr. Jorge Ballester (physics), Mr. John Bellah (biology), Dr. Andrea Luthi (chemistry), Dr. Chris Pettit (physics), and Dr. Qiang Shi (mathematics).

Congratulations to Angela Blackerby, (History, M.A., expected 2020), who recently had a request approved from the Scholars Circle Fundfor her master's project. She will use this $250 allocation to help build a lasting piece of public history: a traveling trunk on prairie pollinators for Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

Congratulations to Dr. Rebecca Rodriguez Carey, assistant professor in Sociology, Anthropology, and Crime and Delinquency Studies, who received the Building Bridges Award at National TRIO Day in Wichita on February 21. 

 

The Teachers College

Pre-service teachers Kalliope Craft, Megan Edwards, Doris Laws, Janet Miranda and Abigail Ponce presented at Educators for Social Justice Conference, St. Louis, Missouri, on February 9. They presented “Creating Brave Spaces: Honoring the Intersection of Identity in Learning Places” with Drs. Melissa Reed and Heather Caswell.

Art therapy student Lindsey Riesselman presented in late February at the Kansas Division of Early Childhood 2019 Conferencein Wichita. Riesselman is a graduate research assistant in early childhood education.

Todd Roberts, elementary education / early childhood / special education, recently achieved his gold certification in Whole Brain Teaching, the first in the nation to get this level of certification while teaching college.

  

Information Technology

Science Hall 72 has a whole new look thanks to renovations and technology additions. The lecture hall features new seating, paint, electrical, wall treatment, and carpet. Room technology was updated to include three displays — two of which are 90-inch LCDs with enhanced audio. These three displays can show two different presentations at the same time. Also included is a new podium, a 27-inch WACOM interactive monitor that allows for drawing and touch, lecture capture and a new Crestron room control.

  

Library & Information Management

Jesse Elston (Colorado 2015) uses his video editingskills as reference and instruction librarian at Front Range Community College in Westminster, Colorado. The videos feature Jeff Wahl (Colorado 2004), FRCC library director. 

Karyl Johnson (Oregon 2016) has begun a new job as research librarian for Research and Worldwide Library Services at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University- Hunt Library in Daytona Beach, Florida.

In May, Gyasi Evans (Colorado 2016) will travel to China to create a librarian exchange programwith China University of Mining and Technology and Coal University Library Consortia. He then stops in Kazakhstan for the VIII Annual International Conference on Emerging Global Trends in University Library Development. Gyasi is outreach and engagement librarian at Colorado School of Mines.

  

Koch Center

Undergraduate students from 12 schools representing eight states gathered February 22-24 for the Koch Center for Leadership and Ethics’ annual Undergraduate Humanomics Colloquiumat the Ambassador Hotel in Wichita. During the course of the weekend, the attendees engaged in discussions bridging the gap between economics, humanities, and philosophy.

 

Business

The School of Business’ three visiting scholars from China toured Hopkins Manufacturingduring their last week at Emporia State. The scholars were Dr. Yongsheng Sun, Associate Professor of Management, Xi'an Polytechnic University; Dr. Yanhua Zhou, Associate Professor, Xinjiang University of Finance and Economics; and Mr. Qiang Gao, lecturer, Xinjiang University of Finance and Economics.

Alumnus Craig Clark presented the Executive Hourto a packed room on March 1. He discussed “Leveraging Social Media for Career Advancement.” Brad & Craig Clark’s next and last Executive Hour of the semester will be on April 5.

 

Athletics

The Hornets basketball seasonended at the MIAA Quarterfinals with a near upset of the No. 1 tournament seed Northwest Missouri. Thanks to a career high 38 points from Julius Jackson, the game down to the wire with a final score of 82-79 Northwest Missouri. 

The Lady Hornets ended the 2018-19 basketball season with a first-round loss in the NCAA Division II Central Regional Tournament in Hayslast week. The team ends Coach Toby Wynn’s inaugural season with a 22-9 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 20th time in the last 23 years.  

Congratulations to Tyra Jones who was named second-team D2CCA All-Central Regionon March 14 before the start of the Central Regional Tournament. She is one of four players from the MIAA to earn all-region honors. Learn more…

 

Student Involvement

Fourteen students, seven representing Black Student Union and seven from the Men of Excellence program, attended the Big XII conference on Black Student Government February 21through 24 at the University of Missouri Columbia.

The Center for Student Involvement hosted rEcharge, a program focusing on self-care through the seven dimensions of wellness. Collaborations for presentations during the event included: Career Services, Alumni Programs, Student Counseling and Student Wellness. Over 80 students participated in the program and experienced a wide variety of experiences including: yoga, guided meditation, sensory play, goal setting, and much more.

Community Hornets and the Communications Department partnered to award the first Community Impact Challenge Grantof $500. The winning team of Rachel Castro, Genevieve Lowery and Delaney Dold will complete “Birthday in a Bag.” Their project provides the supplies such as birthday cake mix, frosting, balloons, etc. for children from low-income families to celebrate their birthday.

 

Presentations

Dr. Amanda Lickteig, school leadership / middle and secondary teacher education, and Dr. Joan Brewer, associate dean of The Teachers College, presented “Making the Impossible Possible: Creating a PDS-Like Model for Secondary Education” at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education71st Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, in late February. 

Tami Schaefer, MBA student, presented her paper "Adjusted Poverty Rates: Emphasis on Counties with Universities" (faculty advisor Dr. Marc Fusaro) at the Capital Graduate Research Summitin Topeka.

Becky Dodge, candidate for the degree Doctor of Philosophy, Library and Information Management, from the School of Library and Information Management, was one of five ESU graduate researchers presenting at the 16th Annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit at the Kansas Capitol Building in Topeka on February 28.
