Emporia State University will celebrate its rich baseball tradition and generous supporters at “Pack the Park” on Saturday, April 12, featuring a special field dedication, ceremonial first pitch and free admission for all fans.

The highlight of the day will be the official dedication of Turnbull Field, honoring the legacy of the late J. Michael Turnbull, a proud alumnus and a lifelong advocate for ESU and Hornet Baseball. The dedication ceremony will precede the Hornets’ 2 p.m. home game against Washburn at the Trusler Sports Complex.

Fueled by a transformative lead gift from the Turnbull Foundation, a $1.3 million renovation has elevated the Hornets’ home field into a first-class facility. The project — which reflects Turnbull’s enduring commitment to students, athletics and the Emporia community — included the installation of a new artificial turf infield and outfield, enhancing both player performance and fan experience at what is now proudly known as Turnbull Field.

The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by Josh Stratman, a longtime friend of Turnbull, Hornet baseball alum and trustee of the Turnbull Foundation Board.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be relocated to the Sauder Alumni Center on the ESU campus.

Turnbull Field represents the collective generosity of numerous supporters, including Ron and Judy McCoy, whose contributions have helped deliver a championship-caliber playing surface and a top-tier experience for Hornet baseball.

While the field takes on a new name, the legacy of Dr. Robert E. Glennen, ESU’s 13th president, will continue to be honored with a commemorative plaque at the stadium.
