Advertising Collective Benefits Student Interns, Clients

After three semesters, the work of interns in Emporia State’s Studio E advertising collective is more visible. “Growing together” is the mantra, according to director Rosalie Krenger, who often is the first point of contact for businesses considering Studio E’s services.

“I tell them, ‘Growing your business is how our interns grow,’” Krenger said.

The advertising collective offers services such as writing, editing, publication design, publicity, marketing, social media, creative direction, promotional goods, web and mobile, photography, videography and sound.

One of Studio E’s most recent projects is also the most visible on campus, and let interns learn a new skill. The firm was hired by Emporia State’s Memorial Union to refresh the look of the Hornet’s Nest dining hall using a diversity and inclusion theme.

The team accomplished its end results with vinyl clings on multiple walls in the space. Students gave up a school holiday to work with local vendor IM Design to install the vinyl, a skill none had ever experienced.

Studio E launched in January 2018 as an academic collaboration of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Business. Students selected for internships are recommended by their professors and interviewed by Krenger.

“While they are still students, these interns are turning out professional-quality work,” Krenger said. “We work with them to ensure that they come out of Emporia State not just as graduates but as emerging professionals.”

The experience is invaluable, said Sarah Richardson, a senior graduating in May with a bachelor of fine arts degree in art, creative writing and art history.

“I would love to get a job as an illustrator,” said Richardson, noting that all of the Studio E interns are able to focus on their talents and strengthen them.

Studio E’s primary client base are nonprofit organizations and small businesses, Krenger said.

“They might be students, but they are very good at what they do,” she said. “And the only way that they are going to get better and continue to grow is by helping other people and organizations grow.”
