Advancing Philanthropy Workshop April 25

The 2017 Advancing Philanthropy in the Flint Hills workshop presents Robert Swanson, President & CEO of Swanson House, Inc. The annual event provides a special opportunity at no cost for individuals, organizations and professional advisors to learn about initiatives and resources that help support the work they do. This year’s event is Tuesday, April 25, at the Flint Hills Technical College. 

Advancing Philanthropy in the Flint Hills is made possible by the Consortium for Continuing Education - Emporia Community Foundation, Emporia State University Foundation, and Flint Hills Technical College Foundation.

Swanson will present “Dynamics of Philanthropy & Major Gift Fundraising.” The presentation will be from 8:30 to 10:45 a.m.

 “This is the third year for the consortium,” said Shirley Antes, Emporia Community Foundation executive director. “The three foundations believe in the power of philanthropy to change lives and improve communities. Providing this annual educational program serves both nonprofit organizations and professionals who work with donors.”

“This partnership’s goal is to increase the number of professionals who better understand philanthropy, ultimately helping communities in the Flint Hills grow and prosper,” said Shane Shivley, president of the Emporia State University Foundation.

Mike Crouch, vice president of advancement for Flint Hills Technical College, said, “The College’s Foundation is proud to be a partner in providing educational opportunities for area professionals.”

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 25. Breakfast is catered by the Tech College chef and culinary arts students. The cost is $10 per meal. Introductions and opening remarks begin at 8:15 a.m., followed by the program at 8:30 a.m. Advance registration is required. Registrations may be submitted by emailing admin@emporiacf.org by Tuesday, April 18 or by calling 620-342-9304. 

The event is open to the public. Attorneys, certified public accountants, nonprofit organizations, financial advisors and insurance agents are highly encouraged to attend.

“Dynamics of Philanthropy & Major Gift Fundraising”

Endless myths have evolved over the years for why donors make major gifts; how they make major gifts; who helps them decide to be philanthropic; and the nonprofit’s roll in making it happen. Learn clear-cut and compelling answers to these often-asked questions:

  • What are the five fallacies of donor motivation?

About the Presenter:

Robert G. Swanson is President & CEO of Swanson House, Inc., a full-service fundraising consulting firm. He and the firm’s consultants work with a wide-range of nonprofits including those in higher education, health and human services, youth development, disaster relief, social justice, and arts and culture.

Swanson is known for his admonitions that “consultants must have courage for their clients”; “charitable gifts are created and not found” and that “communication is the essence of donor appreciation.” He and his fellow consultants believe in the power of philanthropy to change lives for the better and empower communities to chart their own futures. Robert and his consultants have helped more than 500 nonprofits in 40 states raise more than $900 million.

Swanson is a speaker and writer. He has presented to dozens of nonprofit associations including AFP International, Salvation Army, YMCA, Girl Scouts, Feeding America, CASE and the Big XII. He concluded his nonprofit career as President & CEO of the Emporia State University Foundation.
