English Requirements

Academic Minimum TOEFL Scores Required

Undergraduates          520 (190)*
Graduates                  550 (213) *
*Equivalent scores from the computer-based TOEFL test.

If you do not meet these scores or have never taken TOEFL, you will be required to take the ESU English Placement Exam to verify your English proficiency.

Graduate students with a TOEFL score below 575 are required to take a course in English Communication skills.

Intensive English Program Minimum TOEFL Scores Required

Emporia State University offers both intermediate and advanced courses for students who need to improve their communication skills. We do not offer a beginning level; therefore the recommended minimum TOEFL score for entry into our Intensive English Program are as follows:

Undergraduates          400 (97)*
Graduates                  450 (133)*

*Equivalent scores from the computer-based TOEFL test.

The duration of time to complete the Intensive English Program is based on the English Proficiency Test score as well as the student's initiative and performance in class. Students may be allowed to enroll in one or more academic courses while enrolled in the Intensive English Program depending on their placement scores.
